This review is based on an advance reviewer copy but reflects my own opinion.
I started this book thinking it was a novel along the lines of a Max Berry (Company, Syrup, Jennifer Government) but then read Phillip, the author’s biography on the back and realized these were real tales. Phillip is a lawyer that has several strange friends. His best friend Richie is a negligence lawyer who is always setting him up with women and insists on all the details of what happened after. Richie is involved in a lot of unethical things such as people that are more apt to fall and providing a prostitute to service his clients. This prostitute lives in Richie’s garage with the approval of Richie’s wife.
Phillip and Richie have other strange business associates such as the Fatman, who plays with his genitals under his desk while talking to clients. He later believes that he will be immortal if he eats seeds and then picks the seeds from his bowel movements and feed them to seagulls. Others include Mr. O, who is proud of his large male member, Tim who is a record aficionado, and Master Lee who may be a real life assassin.
Phillip tries to get his life in order and to figure out his relationship with his girlfriend Laura. Laura is always probing Phillip with questions about his deepest thoughts but Phillip can never go deep enough into his psyche for her. With all the wacky characters in his life and all the crazy things they do, I don’t know how Phillip thinks his life will ever be normal.
This book is an extremely fast read and what the author reveals is both shocking and funny. I wonder if half of it is true and if it is I hope he changed the names of some of the players or they could be in for some serious difficulties with the law and the American Bar Association.
I generally enjoyed the book and wish it were longer. I would like to know more about the author’s early life and what happened to some of the characters after the book finished.
