Elegant solution

I'm always on the lookout for a camera carrying solution that will keep my back from hurting when I spend more than a couple of hours with my SLR. Neck straps are totally out. I do pretty well with my Blackrapid RS4 Shoulder Strap. That has been a huge improvement over the typical camera strap. Yet, weight on the back is still weight on the back, even if distributed well. Enter the B-Grip.

Put simply, this thing works. It holds my camera securely. It takes the weight off my back. It frees my right hand from restraining the camera when walking through heavy brush, or when scrambling up or down rocks or when maneuvering through crowds. I think the photography corollary of Murphy's Law is that the best shot is always from the most spot to get to. The B-Grip solves all those problems. The camera is locked next to the body and only bounces very slightly. I do have to remember to leave room on my right side when walking around things. I have bumped the camera into branches before I learned the extra distance needed. The thing seems durable. A couple of months of near daily use haven't caused any looseness. The price seems reasonable when compared to other alternative camera carrying systems. All in all a good purchase.

The biggest negative is that the attachment plate fills up the tripod mount on the camera bottom. That's not a problem with a 70-200 (or longer lens) as that has its own mounting place, but for shorter lenses it's a consideration. The Blackrapid strap has the same problem. I solved that by getting a triangular neck strap "ring" and hanging the camera from that. The B-Grip won't work that way. Since I do use my tripod a lot, I have to decide before a shoot whether I want to mount the tripod quick release or the B-Grip mount. I'll try a Manfrotto RC-2 ball head and see if the connection is secure enough. I would love to see somebody make a compatible mounting plate that would fit both this and a tripod head quick release. I still have my modified Blackrapid strap for those times when I want to use the tripod.
