I love the poetry of Charles Coe. Most of these poems reveal a facet of the personality of Edith or Connie Coe. These are the names of his late parents. "Riverside Park" is a poem that stands out to me. This is a poem about Edith Coe's experience of encountering racism as a teenager in Indianapolis. She had gravel thrown in her face when she tried to catch a bus on the way to the amusement park Another poem that stands out is "No Return Policy". This is a poem about the experience about his parents being denied the right to return broken furniture. Charles Coe reveals that his mother never lost her sense of dignity and self respect enduring such racism. "Joan Of Arc" is another poem about his mother. The poem is about the inner strength she possessed to protect herself and the people she loved. I liked this poem very much. "A Symphony Of Crickets" is a poem about his personal experience of feeling awkward about wearing a suit to the symphony to see violinist Issac Stern perform. This poem motivates me to get into the music of Issac Stern and listen to it. I learned that Charles Coe is also a jazz singer. I want to listen to his music after reading his poetry. I am always interested how a person gets interested in cooking. "How My Father Learned How To Cook" is a poem about how his father learned how to cook. His cooking lessons were a form of punishment for stealing a neighbor's tomatoes and throwing them at cars as a kid. He writes about his father's talent for cooking Thanksgiving dinner in a "A Change Of Menu". This poem contains vivid images of delicious food that makes me hungry."Steel" is a reference to the thirty-five years that Connie Coe spent working at a Chervolet car factory. Coe communicates the physical danger involved in this job and how hard he worked. Charles Coe honors his parents in most of these poems. I love every poem in this collection He inspires me to try and write poems about the influence my parents have had on me.
