Ilan Stavans culled through story after story to create an amazing compendium of 80 stories of immigrants from 40 countries over an exciting 400 years of immigrants coming to America.!

Imagine yourself leaving your family, perhaps even spouse and children, packing your things and coming to a country that may not speak your language, finding a place to live, trying to find a way to make money, trying to learn the language.

You get to get the skinny on 400 years of stories from those brave souls who left everything they knew on the other side of their ocean and what impressions they had of America. Italians, Irish, French, German, Austrian, English, Scottish, South Americans, Asians, Africans, Yugoslavian, Polish, Turkish, Ukrainians, russians, Sweedes, Swiss, Servians, Puerto Ricans, Greeks, Koreans, Hungarians....

My own father and grandparents from both sides of my family came through Ellis Island around the turn of the century. Living in the 21st century, it seems almost impossible to me to have had grandparents born in the 1800's, but I did.

These 80 different writers and perspectives are colored as much from where they came from, as who they were, as where they landed in America. You will, of course, find lots about New York and Boston.

Do discover American through this book and come to care about the rest of the lives of these 80 people form 40 countries who share their thoughts and let your imagination run wild, blown after each story ends.

Of course, you will read about people who became famous like W.H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Frank McCourt.

What a fabulous Christmas gift this book would be for all the prime timers in your life who get great enjoyment from reading in their lives now that they have slowed down some.
