Don't mess with Bill.

If there was ever any doubt about who is the greatest National Football League coach of this era Patriots head coach Bill Belichick seems to have erased them once and for all.  His feisty young Pats find themselves at 10-2 high atop the AFC's tough Eastern Division after a resounding 45-3 victory over their archrivals the New York Jets last night at Foxboro.  On this night the Patriots outplayed the Jets in every phase of the game and Bill Belichick made the Jets loud mouth coach Rex Ryan look just plain silly.  It certainly doesn't hurt to have the best QB in the game Tom Brady on your side but time and again Bill Belichick has proven that he is the genius behind the entire Patriots juggernaut.  In fact, it can now be reasonably argued that Bill Belichick just might be the greatest NFL coach of all time.

Think about it. The New England Patriots possess the best won-loss record in the NFL over the past decade.  They have won three Super Bowls and have been competitive just about every year during this period.  In a league that prides itself on competitive balance it is a truly remarkable accomplishment.  Bill Belichick is the penultimate "hands on" guy.  Aside from being one of the best game day tacticians in league history Belichick is also heavily involved in all of the Patriots personnel decisions.  Unlike some of the coaches and executives in the National Football League Bill Belichick is not interested in signing superstars.  Rather he is looking for players who are smart, talented, versatile and committed to winning above all else.  And somehow he finds them. Exhibit A in 2010 is Danny Woodhead, a diminutive running back cut loose by the Jets early in the season.  When the veteran RB Kevin Faulk was injured Belichick immediately signed the versatile Woodhead and the decision paid immediate dividends.  Woodhead has been simply brilliant both carrying and catching the football and has become a major factor in the imaginative offense led by Tom Brady.  Meanwhile, Belichick has successfully rebuilt what had become an aging Patriots defense in just a couple of years.  Despite the fact that longtime Patriots Vice President of Personnel Scott Pioli left New England to take charge of the Kansas City Chiefs the Patriots had an amazing draft in 2010.  In fact, six of the Patriots first seven picks are on the roster and making significant contributions.  Remarkable!

To be sure Patriots owner Robert Kraft has built an outstanding organization and deserves his share of the credit for the extraordinary accomplishments of his team.  Mr. Kraft is willing to spend whatever it takes to give his coach the tools he needs to be successful.  Over the years Bill Belichick has had the great good fortune to be surrounded by an extremely talented cast of assistant coaches.  Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini and Josh McDaniel are just some of the people who have made significant contributions along the way.  All have gone on to other positions in the NFL but in spite of their departures "Ol' Man River" Bill Belichick just keeps rolling along.  Remarkably, he is still only 58 years old and while coaching contemporaries like Tony Dungy and Bill Cowher seem to burn out and opt for a hiatus from the coaching grind Bill Belichick has shown no such inclination.  From all indications Bill intends to go on coaching for a long time to come.  It seems to me that after thrashing the Jets so convincingly last night the Pats have to be considered the odds-on favorites to win the 2011 Super Bowl.  And this was supposed to be a rebuilding year!  Furthermore, due to some extremely shrewd trades the Patriots are armed with a whole host of high draft picks in the 2011 draft.  It looks like the Patriots success is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. So whether you love him or hate him you cannot deny that Bill Belichick ranks right up there as one of the NFL's all time coaching greats. Very highly recommended!
Don't mess with Bill. Don't mess with Bill. Don't mess with Bill. Don't mess with Bill.
