Birdo has a bit of a mixed history, and is one of the few genuinely transgender people in videogames. Of course, this is offset by the fact that she isn't really human, and Nintendo at times seems to hem and haw about what Birdo is exactly.

However, in a game that never saw a North American release, Captain Rainbow (yes, that was its name) has Birdo as an NPC who is in jail. In order to provide her alibi, you have to find what is implied as her vibrator in order to get her out.

It makes how often she's paired with Yoshi in the Kart games and such rather interesting.

I never knew about Captain Rainbow, damn censors ;p But, that's really interesting. You're right- it does make the pairing with Yoshi interesting as well. Great write-up!
