Take me on a Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde anyday...

I have a confession, I haven't always loved hip hop. I didn't always know the difference between rap and hip-hop. It was 1998 and there was an influx of gangster rap that I couldn't relate to nor did I want to even try. I was dating a guy who loved hip-hop at the time, however, and would constantly turn off my funk or soul to put on his music. At first, I fought. Then, I listened as he put on Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde by The Pharcyde.

This is hip hop?, I asked increduously. The lyrics were hilarious and reminded me of the neverending Yo Mama battles I got into with some friends on the streets of San Francisco. Here was a hip-hop song using Yo Mama jokes and half of them I'd never heard before-

"Yo Mama's got an Afro with a chin strap, Yo Mama's got a peg leg with a kickstand, Ya Mama got a glass eye with a fish in it...."

I hadn't laughed that hard in so long. Then, there came "Oh Sh@*!" all about songs that would make you exclaim that. Stories of making out with a girl that turns out to be a guy or a friend's mom coming onto you, make up the lyrics to that song. By this time, I was seriously reconsidering my dislike of hip-hop.

By the end of "Passin' Me By", I was completely over any negativity I had placed on hip-hop. This was my first lesson in the difference between rap and hip hop. I give "Passin' Me By" full credit for waking me out of my stupor. It was the first song that I had heard from a guy's point of view on having a crush on a girl and wanting to tell her how he felt without any disrepectful profanities uttered about the girl.

Pharcyde is an example of hip hop when hip hop was about having a good time with your friends and not about how much money you have or the hoes you have or any of that. Pharcyde's about making you want to dance and have fun and let loose. Trust me, after one listen to Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde, you'll be begging to go on the ride again, like you did for your first roller coaster.
