Let Blake Shelton's "Cheers, it's Christmas" Kick Off Your Holiday Season

Well, it’s that time of the year…. kind of. Christmas may be a couple of months away, but Blake Shelton is already spreading the holiday joy with his new album, “Cheers, its Christmas.”  The always joking, fun-loving coach on “The Voice,” CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee, and fun to follow tweeter has come out with a Christmas album that will no doubt get you in the mood to trim the tree.
The 14 track album is chalked full of classics with some fun original tunes mixed in as well. Blake didn’t go at this project alone. He enlisted the voices of some friends and family to make this album a must have in your holiday collection. Miranda Lambert joins her husband for “Jingle Bell Rock,” the song that kicks off the album. This is a favorite of mine anyway, but having Blake and Miranda add their chemistry and flare make it a song I could listen to year round. The Pistol Annies join Blake on “Blue Christmas,” which proved to be the perfect pairing for this song and one of my favorite tracks on the album is “Oklahoma Christmas,” featuring the one and only Reba McEntire.  Blake also brought Xenia from “The Voice” on board to help him out with the Christmas standard “Silver Bells” and Kelly Clarkson adds her vocals on “There’s a New Kid In Town.” Other notable songs on the album include “Home,” featuring Michael Buble, and Blake’s version of “The Christmas Song.”
All of the musical partnerships on the album are fantastic, but there is one that is clearly my favorite. Blake sings with a very special woman in his life on “Time For Me to Come Home,” and that person is his mom, Dorothy Shackleford. The mother/son duo wrote the song and sang it together on the album. The song is about a son who is gone a lot and a mother who longs to see him. Obviously this sentiment comes from a very real place in the case of Blake and Dorothy. Her sweet voice is nothing short of delightful and gives this project just that much more warmth and holiday sentiment.
We already know that Blake Shelton is a talented vocalist and of course we all know that he likes to keep the humor fresh, but this album shows a softer side to Blake that I think suits him just fine. You can tell that these songs mean something to him and that he truly wants to share the Christmas spirit with his fans. Many Christmas albums can be very generic sounding, but “Cheers, It’s Christmas” has personality and stands out in a sea of holiday cheer. I would definitely recommend adding this album to your playlists at your holiday parties, or wrapping it up and putting it under the tree. While I usually don’t like to hear Christmas music until after Thanksgiving, I may make an exception for this album…. it’s just that GOOD!
