I've been involved for three years now in East TN's YWCA Big READ. An annual event in which the YWCA and The Knox County Library's choose a book and encourage everyone in the community to read and go to various events inOctober. 2009 book was Bless me, Ultima. I have mixed feelings on this book. I learned a lot (always a plus) about Mexican American culture. But I didn't really enjoy the read. It was slow and frustrating and left me wondering why some characters were not more fully completed.

Excellent depiction of life in rural Guadalupe County, New Mexico during WWII. (Santa Rosa, NM) The book is commonly challenged for its profanity: the young gang of boys in the novel use Spanish and English curse words frequent.  They even go as far as making a mess of a nativity set on stage while using this language.  The novel centers around 6 years old Antonio Marez and Ultima, a Native American curandera and old family friend who comes to live with him and his family.  He …
