Jake Cole is the antithesis of an FBI agent. He has full body tattoos (from the time of his life when he was heavily addicted to drugs), and has a special ability to look at a murder scene and using his mind, he can figure out what transpired. This insight into killers' minds have made him a top serial murder investigator. He also wears a pacemaker and his heart can go out at any time.

Jake returns to the home of his estranged father(Jacob) to put his father's affairs in order. His father is in the hospital with severe burns and hands burned down to stubs. He also appears to have Alzheimer's. His Montauk house is in total disarray with pieces of lawn and other matter in the refrigerator. There are also a bunch of weird paintings that Jacob had done with faceless bloody men.

While Jake is there he is called by the local police to a murder scene where a woman and boy have been skinned alive. Jake is determined to find who did this because several years ago his mother met the same fate and he feels her killer has returned. To make things more complicated a huge hurricane is bearing down on Montauk, so residents are being told to evacuate. This storm also brings a lot of electrical energy which keeps doing weird things to Jake's pacemaker.

As Jake investigates, people close to him start showing up dead. When his own wife and son go missing, Jake becomes a man possessed to get to the "Bloodman" before they are added to his list of murders.

This is an excellent psychological thriller that is something that Hitchcock could produce. The tension is rife as Jake is racing while the storm bears down. This is a story that wastes no single page. Everything that seems "odd" is significant to finding out the ultimate truth. I would have given this one a full five stars but the first half of the book is slow at times and there were a couple of loose ends that are not fully tied down in the end.
