As you may know, I am not a big fan of modern medicine. Though medicine does have its place, for the most part I believe drugs have done a lot more harm than good. Our family prefers natural remedies for minor discomforts like cold, flu, sore throat, headaches, and bruises. Well, and for most other ailments too! I was always aware of a myriad of natural ways to treat cold and flu, but what do you do for bruises and muscle aches? Not just for the pain associated with them, but for making them go away faster.

The answer is arnica! Boiron makes a great Arnica Gel that is made in France. We bought ours at drugstore dot com, it was one of the non-drug items covered by our FSA card. The reason it caught my attention is mainly the reviews written by other people. Athletes swear by its potency in healing sprains. Arthritis pain is relieved. Martial arts enthusiasts always have it at hand. Moms keep the secret weapon in their purses at the playground. My first thought was "This is perfect for my husband's sore muscles". Little did I know that it would be indispensable with a toddler!

Our Experience: Before our daughter was born we used the Boiron Arnica Gel for the occasional sore muscle or bruise. It did not get much use, but I knew it worked. I had to find out how well it works the hard way unfortunately. Recently our one year old daughter was toddling around and like all toddlers do, she fell. She hit her head on the plastic computer case. She was supervised, but you just can't prevent these things from happening, they always find something to hit themselves on! The bruise was horrendous, it almost looked like she had a deformed skull. It was a closed wound, just like a round golf ball sticking out with a line down the middle from where she hit the head. After the initial shock of seeing it when my husband brought her to me, I quickly went for the Boiron Arnica Gel. She stopped crying a few minutes after application. By the time we got to the useless emergency room, the swelling went down significantly. Consider this is without applying any ice, because she would not let us. We waited around a little but went home because our toddler was acting perfectly fine as if nothing had happened and it was time for her nap. 

Why I think Everyone Should Have It: We kept applying the gel a couple of times a day for the next few days and it is totally amazing! The bruise is almost gone, and I thought it would be permanent. This is simply an indispensable must have for any mother with children of any age. Be it a two year old toddler who is learning his way around the playground or a twelve year old skateboarder who is into new tricks every day. It doesn't end there. It is perfect for athletes and recreational sports, hiking, camping, karate class, summer camp, gym class, arthritis sufferers, and for those that do manual labor at work. It applies clear, it's not greasy, has no nasty smell. It has a slight smell of alcohol - one of the inactive ingredients. Plus it is a bargain considering the miraculous healing properties at around $15 for a two pack that will last indefinitely. On drugstore dot com, 45 people have rated it an average of 5 stars, that says a lot. I think no first aid kit, backpack, or diaper bag should be without Boiron Arnica Gel!

Thanks for the review. Interesting product, I will definitely have to look into this one. I think my Fibromyalgia clients might find it useful too.

Arnica is great - it saved me while recovering from labor (oral tablets), and we use an awesome product by Hylands for our toddler (you'd love it!), that's a bumps & bruises stick w/ Arnica in it. It's a frequent go-to for our adventuresome daredevil ... gets used multiple times a week at our house ; ) Great homeopathic remedy that really works!!

Thanks for the comment! We have the Bumps & Bruises stick as well actually :) It came with the Hyland's Homeopathic Kids Kit. Did you buy it separately? If you did, I highly recommend the kids kit as well. :)

Thanks for this review! I will definitely be keeping this product in mind. Elijah is starting to do lots of falling, it's only a matter of time before a bruise pops up!

Wow, you're quick Jess! I just posted the review a minute ago and I already get a comment from you! Yes, definitely a good thing to have on hand. I don't know how I lived without it. Many people also mentioned that it is good on surgical scars and such - keep that in mind :)

That's what happens when I am laying in bed nursing Eli! That's god to know re: surgical scars! I have been using Earth Mama Angel Baby C-Mama Salve, I wonder if it has arnica in it. I should write a review of that!
