There is a book about some French guy called Rael who had an unusual experience back in 1973. Can anyone say how this thing has managed to remain virtually unheard of for so long?

Lots of reasons -- foreign writer, bad marketing, limited publication, and so on. There are several authors named Rael, and you're not being very helpful with only a scattering of info here. That's probably another reason he's virtually unheard of -- not enough info on his works, even here in your question!!
