My taste in music is pretty broad. I love alternative rock, folk but I'm also really into dance music. I like the stuff that's popular in clubs now - Rihanna, T.I., Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, etc. I think their music is really great to dance to!
I never cared much for techno and house and I can't get excited about a DJ mixing the songs - to me they almost always sound like mutated versions of themselves.
So when my friend wanted to go dancing at Bootie SF, I was not sure if I would enjoy it. Bootie SF is a mashup party... but I did not know the difference between a remix and a mashup! Those are two different things! While I hate remixes, I love mashups.
To be honest, I was surprised that I loved it as much as I did! The music was awesome. Not sure why this kind of mixing worked for me - maybe because both songs were left in tact, maybe because the songs blended well together, maybe because of the choice of music.
A lot of the mashups used older songs from the 80's and 90's. One of my favorites was a mashup of Lady Gaga's Just Dance with The Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams. Another great one was Leona Lewis's Bleeding Love with The Police's Every Breath You Take. I found similar version online that I posted below.
There was also a band that played live mashups. They were also good and very entertaining. If you need a break from dancing, you can go upstairs where people just hang out. The place got crowded when I was there, so getting a drink takes a little while.
The crowd was totally mixed - very eclectic. People in jeans and others all dressed up, from goth to posh. Everything goes - all united in dance. San Francisco is where it all started, but there are Booties in cities like New York, Los Angeles and Boston too.
