The only kettle you'll ever need

When my husband and I got married we had a regular stove top tea kettle on our wedding registry. It served us well until about a year later when one of us left the kettle on the stove with the whistle cap open and forgot about it. You can imagine what it looked liked, right? Wish I had a photo of that :) So considering we are strictly tea drinkers and don't even own a coffee maker, we proceeded to search for an electric tea kettle with automatic shut off to avoid a similar scenario in the future. In addition to that, one of my criteria was that it had to have a flat base. I really dislike the ones with a coil inside that gets build-up on it. Why bother if you can avoid that?

So we went to Bed Bath and Beyond and this looked like the best option. The stainless steel would look great with the rest of our appliances and it had the features we wanted. Although the price tag of $79.99 was more than we had hoped to spend, we needed it pronto and did not want to waste anymore time searching. I'm glad we made that decision! It turned out to be a great purchase and now, almost two years later it has served us very well.

The Breville ikon is versatile, you can heat just a couple of cups of water or about six if you have company. By six I mean medium sized mugs. When we drink tea we go for the big cups, so when I say 'tea' don't envision a dainty little English cup ;) With automatic shut off you never have to worry about burning it. It is very easy to clean, and that was a very important aspect to me. With a flat base inside and a covered heating element it does not have any build-up. I haven't timed it, but it is pretty fast. If I am making breakfast for example, I pour in water and turn it on only when the food is pretty much ready so that it is boiling hot when I pour the tea. I love the little chime when it is done boiling, a lot more pleasant than my toaster oven and it doesn't wake up the baby. Speaking of babies, this kettle does get hot on the outside when it boils, so keep it away from babies and children! My little girl already knows that it is hot and says 'hot' when she watches it boil. So cute!

As for design, this kettle delivers. It is very simple and stylish. One of my pet peeves is drippy spouts. The spout on the ikon is great though, the water goes where you want it to and never drips down the side. I also appreciate the glow of the quantity meter on the side, looks impressive. There is only one minor thing - I wish the switch would automatically click to the off position if you remove the kettle before the water is finished boiling. The water boils for a good minute at the end and sometimes I just take the kettle and start pouring before it is done. Then I place it back and it keeps on boiling even though there is barely any water in there. Though I do see why someone would want the opposite, I think most people would assume it switches off when you remove the kettle from the base.

Oh, and last but not least, watching this kettle boil is one of my daughter's favorite activities!

Yep, i've noticed about the switch in my other brands of electric kettle as well. If it's constantly not completely switched off before you remove it from the base, eventually the kettle will begin to drip (after about a year usage!). I like my kettle small though, best if it boils only 2 cups! Found one in China recently although it's a local brand. Been great just boiling it whenever I need to make a cup of hot coffee and it's cheap, just 10 bucks!

I've used this one for almost two years and have no dripping issues, it is great! $10 is certainly a great deal for the one you have :)

Indeed it is a bargain! I'm just waiting to see how long it'll last ;-) My bet is not more than a year! If it's anything more than that, I'll be very happy :-)

$80 kettle?  Must be pretty amazing!  This is indeed very simple and stylish looking, too.  Thanks for sharing! :)
