How Brilliant Earth Brings Home the Booty

20 years married and never wore a wedding ring! And it wasn't for any ethical reason either. Just never wore rings and thought we never would.

But then, we happened upon Brilliant Earth Jewelers (at the San Francisco Green Festival) and for the first time ever I was moved to set up a visit to the jewelers.... and look at.....; sapphires.... emeralds.... diamonds.... gold.... silver...... Wow; amazing precious fruits of the Earth; and benefiting the regions, the communities from whence they come.

Now I am astonished, delighted; the proud owner of....; a white gold sapphire wedding ring.

We as a People are finally finally able to play a part in helping to resolve and transform what has been called 'The Resource Curse'; (resource-rich regions have notoriously seen more conflict and deprivation than places that have nothing to exploit).

Now finally, the people who are mining these precious gems and metals are getting to reap the rewards of their labor. Now finally, their health and wellbeing is factored in. Now finally, their kids get to have a life worth living..., while we get to cherish our carefully selected Brilliant Earth jewels.

Now that's what I call a Win-Win!

'The resource curse' (also known as the paradox of plenty) refers to the paradox that countries and regions with an abundance of natural resources, specifically point-source non-renewable resources like minerals and fuels, tend to have less economic growth and worse development outcomes than countries with fewer natural resources. I have visited their website several times but found that everything was out of our price range. Their pieces are amazing works of art! I know @devora would appreciate it, she studied gemology. She has written a great review of Moissanite, a nice alternative to mined diamonds.

yes..; not cheap! My white gold/single sapphire ring was $400 and since I never had bought a piece of jewelry of the caliber, it certainly was a chunk o' change. But it's amazing what you can come up with when the time is right :)
