Californication: Season 4 Finale - And Justice for All

One of Showtime networks best shows starring David Duchovny (The Joneses, X- Files) has ended its fourth season Sunday night, and left viewers hungry for more.  Now fans must wait a whole year before they get their answers.  Is Hank really free of prison? Are Hank and Karen really finished?  Where was Hank driving to at the end?  Was he leaving town?  Has he learned his lesson?  All will have to wait obviously, and quite honestly I thought this finale would be alot less of the norm and more of something new.  What was I thinking?  However, viewers cannot get enough of Hank Moody and his crazy lifestyle - so we are left guessing: What will season 5 bring?

Honestly, my money was on Hank going to prison for statutory rape in this last episode.  What a surprise that one was when all he got was some probation and…community service?   Then again, Hank getting away with bloody murder probably wouldn’t be so surprising since he has gotten away with everything else.  This season was all about Hank dealing with the consequences of everything he has done since season one.  There was the aforementioned statutory rape of Karen’s ex-fiance’s 16 year old consenting daughter Mia(let’s admit that wasn’t Hanks fault), the sex addiction, the drunken fist fights, the alcohol, the drugs, and you get the picture.  Hank cruised through each episode of the past seasons getting away with everything except murder, and viewers kept wondering when karma would come knocking – well, it finally did in these last couple of episodes.  However, Californication is much more than just a drunk charming writer of wit living a life full of downward spirals.  It shows us the very fabric of life and happiness, proving how delicate it really is, and how easy it can be lost if taken for granted.

As the judge drops the hammer and sentences Hank Moody to 3 years of…..Hank passes out in the middle of the courtroom.  He wakes up to his attorney Abby (Carla Gugino, Suckerpunch, Entourage) telling him that he will not have to do any prison time.  And what does good ole’ Hank do next?  What he does NOT do is immediately celebrate with his family and friends.  Hank goes and has sex with his lawyer.  No surprise there either since every episode has involved someone, mostly Hank, having sex.  The sad part though, is that Hank really loves Karen (Natasha McElhone, Thorne: Sleepyhead) and his teenage daughter Becca.  Even in his closing speech in court he admits that he has regretted hurting the both of them, and throughout the entire last four seasons Hank has felt this over and over again. Yet, over and over again, Hank still finds himself committing the same acts.  Will he ever learn?  What’s it going to take?

Viewers also got to see Marcy finally admit to Charlie that the baby she is carrying is really his, over a celebration dinner with all the characters and Eddie Nero (Rob Lowe); who shows up dressed like Hank. This ends the dinner in a hilarious fistfight between Marcy and Charlie’s loopy new girlfriend.  Yet we are left in the dark on what this all means for Charlie and Marcy.  Will they get back together and try to raise a baby?  Not sure how those two will get back together after all that has been done, but it will be interesting to see.

This leaves Karen and Hank, as the last few scenes shows Hank re-capping all the lovely times with Karen and Becca.  One scene where Hank almost accidently drowns in a swimming pool only to be saved by what appears to be Jesus Christ, but turns out to be Karen’s new man – Ben.  “Black Jesus”, Hank says to Ben.   Not sure what that scene meant, but I get the feeling that Hank and Karen are not finished – but not without difficulty, since Ben is in the picture and Hank owes him one now for saving his life instead of wanting to punch him.   However, saving Hank’s life may not be such a great thing to Hank – as he drifts through the final last scenes saying bon voyage to his family as they go on vacation with Ben.  Will Hank win Karen back?  As Hank walks through the set of the new movie “Fucking and Punching” basically about his life; he is reminded again of his family while watching the actors rehearse their scenes.  What does Hank do next?  He sleeps with the actress that is playing Karen – and of course he does!  As Hank drives off into the sunset - we are left with many questions like:  Will Hank get Karen back? Or will Hank move back to New York?  What’s going to happen with Charlie, Marcy and the future baby?  Maybe it will be back to the same old song and dance of Hank messing things up as usual, or maybe something will be different this time.   I guess we shall wait and see.
