Calphalon 13" Spatter Guard

Pros:well made, high quality
Cons:...none for me
The Bottom Line: Does a great job and easy to clean

I have a real aversion to preparing food and getting spattered by hot grease or having items I am cooking sputter and spurt all over my range top. After going through a variety of spatter screens, I finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase a well made spatter guard, settling on the Calphalon 13-in. Universal Splatter Guard.

It measures 20" x 13" and is made of high quality stainless steel. The surface has inverted rings to fit the various sizes of pot, pan, or skillet you are using. It is also perforated to allow steam to escape but the holes are not large enough to let snap, crackles, or pops to hurt you or spatter your cooking surface. The handle, although stainless like the entire unit, is partially covered by a padded silicone.

Because of the stainless steel, the piece will not rust but it must be washed by hand with warm, soapy water. Don't ask me why but they insist you do not wash it in your dishwasher. It comes with a lifetime warranty for manufacturing defects.

I've had several spatter guards, mostly those nasty ones made with screen inserts. After a short period they rust, are hard to clean, and generally get tears or rips in them. That is why I like this one so much, it is sturdy and well made. It cleans so easily and fits all sizes of cooking items I decide to use.

Of course I generally place my screen right in a sink of warm water after using it, just so spatters do not set up and become difficult to clean off. I've heard some complain if you let it sit long enough for spatters or grease to set up it is almost impossible to clean. They say in the instructions that you should let the unit cool before cleaning but not to let it sit long enough for items toharden on the surface. They also instruct you to not use any abrasive cleaners or oven cleaners on your piece.

Personally I've had no problems with my spatter guard. I use it for fried items as well as sauces. It is heavy duty and does not appear, because of the quality of the steel, that it will warp or become damaged during normal use and cleaning. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Haha, ditto what the other two said -- I need one of these, too! When I'm cooking something heavy duty, I actually cover the area with saran wrap. Wouldn't hurt to have this in conjunction with that. Thank you for sharing!

I'd be afraid Saran Wrap would melt? Good luck on an anti-pop & fizzle life ... thanks

I need one, too! I was just thinking about this last night as I was frying some empanadillas and hot oil was getting all over my stove top. Your review is perfectly timed, thanks for sharing :)
