The Canon CanoScan 4400F Color Image Scanner is quality scanner that does everything, but does nothing to exceed expectations. I was looking for a scanner mostly for document scanning, but one with the ability to scan the occasional photo, slide, or negative. I was able to find this model on Amazon for $88.24. Given the price, I am satisfied with my purchase and can recommend it to anyone with similar requirements. Pros:
4800 x 9600 DPI
Easy scanner buttons
A little bit bulky
Separate power cable (i.e. it is not powered from the USB cable)
Photo scanning is clunky and not excellent quality
It is a big hassle having to plug in the scanner with a separate power supply. (My previous document-only scanner was powered through the USB cable and this was a big plus.) I am actually disappointed with the scan quality for color slides. I would not use this device to scan a large collection of family slides, but it works for getting an occasional photo for use on a web page.
So for less than $100, you can have a scanner that is easy to use and will scan pretty much anything. If you are not overly concerned about photo quality and can live with a larger device, the added flexibility is nice. If you want to scan a lot of photos though, I would recommend getting a photo scanner designed solely for that purpose.
