The Carolina Theatre was built as a separate auditorium for Durham High School in 1926. Known as Durham Auditorium it provided for both public functions such as high school graduation and live entertainment for national touring attractions such as Will Rogers' Ziegfield's Sally. The Carolina became the only Durham theatre to admit African Americans, though there were seperate doors, ticket booths and lounges. In 1986 The County and the city of Durham appropriated a bond to restore The Carolina Theatre. A new hotel and civic center were built next door and in 1988 a new cinema center and a restored theater were opened.
