Traditional cat litters are made from clay, which has a couple of problems: it's generally strip-mined, and the dust can irritate you cat's respiratory system. I've found that alternatives made from pine sawdust and corn work well in terms of odor control without these other issues.

Not to mention that the clay in cat litter bothered my respiratory system! After using clay cat litter for a few months, I switched to the corn-based litter. I and my 3 cats like it so much better, and it performs as well (if not better). :)

Now we only have one cat, I've shifted to the pine litter (the sawdust kind, not those hard little pellets). Like it better for odor control... even after a few days, it gives off pine scent (the real deal) when I clean the box... Did use the corn-based stuff for a number of year, though... worked better for multiple cats.
