CentralWorld (Thai: เซ็นทรัลเวิลด์) is a shopping plaza and complex in Bangkok, Thailand^[1]. It is the third largest shopping complex in the world. The complex, which included a hotel and office tower, is owned by Central Pattana. In 2006, after three years of design and renovation, CentralWorld was expanded to 550,000 square metres of shopping mall and 1,024,000 square metres of complex, topping its nearby rival Siam Paragon in terms of size.

On 19th May 2010, CentralWorld was one of the many properties set on fire by members of the Red Shirts anti government protestors as they were being cracked down after months of violent demonstration which included complete blockage of the Rachaprasong shopping district. The portion of the complex most affected were the Zens department store and its adjacent annex. The owners later indicated that portions of the center could be back in operation in as little as six months.^[2]

The unaffected portion of the shopping complex reopened on 28th September 2010 after months of repair work.^[3]

A Quick Tip by Sharrie

It is the 3rd largest shopping complex in the world with more than 1/2 million sq. m of shopping mall. A portion of the complex was set on fire during this year's violence in Bangkok. CentralWorld has Isetan, & Toys R US as key tenants. There is a supermarket, theaters and furniture retailers within CentralWorld.
