The place to be if your child needs serious medical attention

Although I hope no parent will ever have to bring their child here, we live in an imperfect world, stuff happens - so perhaps someone might find this useful. We had an unfortunate experience with the Children's Hospital in Boston both in the ER and a short in-patient stay, but it was positive in the terms of service and care we received. Here is my take on this place:

  • Convenient location in downtown Boston with discounted parking for parents and guardians ($9/day)
  • Short ER wait times (at least at 1 am Sunday)
  • Very knowledgeable and courteous doctors who respected our unconventional approaches to health and parenting and explained everything thoroughly
  • Specialists that have specific experience with children
  • Building with many updates and renovations, convenient and clean patient rooms, and the latest in medical equipment and technology
  • Au Bon Pain and a CVS  located in their lobby
  • A green courtyard for walks
  • Good room service
  • Wifi throughout the hospital
  • In-patient nurses were extremely nice, to the point of changing diapers when an exhausted mom is half asleep
  • Despite the knowledge of the doctors, they could never tell us 100% what the problem was, the best we could get is a 90% guess
  • Not so courteous ER nurses that were talking behind our back (when they thought we could not hear them)
  • Meals for parents are at an additional charge
  • Only one parent can room-in with child over night (i.e. only one cot allowed in each room because of fire safety code regulations)
  • (Two week old infant) + (ER nurse inexperienced with drawing blood from infants) = 20 minutes of torture without any results [note: if you should ever end up here with an infant, ask for an experienced lab worker to draw blood, it takes them all of pain free 60 seconds]
  • It is painful yet eye-opening to see so many sick and disabled children (just an hour of observation sitting in the lobby)
Consider the traffic if it is not an emergency, come/leave before or after rush hour. As with any hospital, make sure your insurance covers the needed procedures, or that you can at least pay whatever it does not cover - we were unpleasantly surprised to have to pay more than expected...that can lead to a new data point of the state of health care (or should we say sick care?)  in America, but let's not go there!
