Believe it or not it is the official drink of the State of Rhode Island. Try it...you'll like it!

I am really not sure how many of these United States boast an official state drink but here in little Rhode Island our esteemed state legislature passed a resolution back in 1993 proclaiming "coffee milk" the official state drink of the Ocean State.  You would think that they would have better things to do!   Anyway, chances are that most of you reading this have never even heard of this cocoction but in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts "coffee milk" is wildly popular.

If this is a drink that sounds intriguing to you and you are even remotely interested you might take a quick glance at the wiki to learn the history of this fabulous and refreshing beverage.  Or you can go to www.autocrat.com for more information as well. I got hooked on the stuff when I was a little kid and have been drinking it ever since.  Around here there are several companies that manufacture coffee syrup and coffee milk is offered right alongside chocolate milk in diners, restaurants and convenience stores everywhere.  The most popular brand of coffee syrup is manufactured by Autocrat Inc., a locally owned and operated coffee roaster who has been making this product since the 1940's.  Legend has it that it was local Portuguese folk who first had the idea of making a coffee syrup.  This makes perfect sense to me as there is a rather substantial Portuguese population in our area and it appears that the Portuguese are extremely fond of coffee flavored anything.  At the same time there is also a school of thought that credits local Italians for coming up with the idea.  No matter.  Regardless of who came up with the idea it is a terrific drink.  I am amazed that it has yet to go national.

The folks at Autocrat will tell you that they ship coffee syrup to virtually every state in the union.  That's because when people move away from here they still need their coffee milk fix.  It is rather addicting.  I know that if I ever left I would be ordering it for myself as well.  Even now, I buy Autocrat coffee syrup in the one gallon jug just to make sure that I never run out.  When the idea of Lunch.com was conceived one of the things I was hoping the community could share with each other was local and regional foods.  America is so homogenized now that it is fun to learn about products that are peculiar to a particular state or region.  I recall that when travelling in Utah my wife and I had a chance to sample Root Beer milk. We both loved it but have never seen it anyplace else.

And so as a true blue born and bred Rhode Islander I would like to recommend to you our official state drink.  If you ever have the opportunity to sample coffee milk give it a shot.  This is a refreshing and delicious drink that is a whole lot cheaper than cappuchinos and the other expensive drinks that you find at places like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts.  I am confident that you will enjoy it.   Very highly recommended!

One of my fondest memories of growing up as a child in Louisiana was going to my grandpa and grandma's house and drinking coffee milk and eating coconut stacks.

Oh no. This is much better than that. Just go to www.autocrat.com and you can see the syrup that is used. There are a number of companies around here that manufacture coffee syrup but most consider Autocrat to be the best.

There is quite a lot of coffee milk in Japan (if i'm not mistaken) but have never heard of Root Beer Milk. That's interesting! Darn, I missed it when in Utah! Perhaps you should write a review on it! :-) If Coffee milk is a state drink, then Coca Cola is definitely a national drink! I know I can't live without my Diet Coke! As for coffee, well, if I tell you I'd travel with my coffee, would you believe it? ;-)

Coffee milk in Japan?? Wow! That is certainly news to me. You cannot imagine how big it is around here. As for the Root Beer Milk my wife and I tried it at a convenience store off the interstate and never saw it again. Since I only had it once I would not be qualified to review. But I enjoy coffee milk several times a week!

How do you make it at home? Just heat up the milk and add coffee powder into it? Right?

Oh yes, the Japanese has all kinds of drinks! I love surprising myself whenever I'm there simply by trying out all kinds of different cans from its vending machine!

If anyone is interested you can order coffee syrup online at www.autocrat.com.

I've heard of things like state bird, and state rock, etc, but I've never heard of a state drink before.  Interesting! :P  And yes, Lunch is a great place to review local and regional foods like this!  This is the first that I've ever heard of coffee milk, but it sounds delicious, so I'll have to try it.  Oh, and you should totally review root beer milk because you've peaked my interest now!  Thanks for sharing, Paul :)
