From now on when it comes to trying to get rid of fleas off of my dogs or just a maintenance of this type, I will always check with my Vet before I choose to purchase something. Since our little mishap, where we almost lost our little four legged family members, we have been in constant contact with the Vets office. This is how we found that there are only two types of flea control that they will recommend. The first one is the one that they call "Front Line" and this will take care of both fleas and ticks (this is the regular squeeze on type), the other one is called "Comfortis" which only controls fleas, but only comes in a chewable tablet form. As far as I know this can only be purchased through a Vet and is comes in different colored boxes so that it is easier to remember which kind that you had purchased before. Each color covers a different weight class.

This is made by a very famous company called the Eli Lilly company. They sell pet health products in over 75 countries and can treat things other than fleas. They are also able to treat other things such as depression, schizophrenia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, diabetes, osteoporosis and a whole heck of a lot of other diseases.

Description
These tablets are tan-ish to gray in color and come 6 to a box. You can purchase these individually or by the six pack. They are beef flavored and dogs love them almost as much as a regular treat. These are very easy to give to your pets and will start to kill fleas within thirty minutes. The only down side of the pill is that they, just like any other pill you will need to give it to your pet every 30 days. This pill is supposed to kill the fleas before they start to lay eggs. This is also approved by the FDA and is only safe for dogs and puppies over 14 weeks of age. As long as you remember that this is only for fleas and not ticks you will be okay.

Unlike all of the other products, you will not have to worry about this rubbing off onto you or your kids. The active ingredient in all of these pills is "Spinosad", no  matter what the size of pill. There is five different colors and which color is determined by the weight of your pet. The pink box is for the smallest  5-10 pound dogs and has 140mg of this ingredient inside of the pill. The next box is the orange box and it is good for 10.1-20 pound dogs and has 270mg of this ingredient inside of the pill. The next color is green and it is good for dogs weighing 20.1-40 pounds and it has 560mg inside of the pill. Then there is the blue box which is for dogs weighing 40.1-60 pounds and has 810mg if this ingredient inside of the pill. The last color is brown, and it will cover dogs weighing from 60.1 - 120 pounds and has 1620mg if this medicine inside of this pill.

Experience
We started to give this to our pets once we had a bad result from Sergeants Gold flea and tick treatment. We did not know that this was going to be this easy, we didn't even have to slide this into a slice of cheese or a hot dog. We just simply asked them if they wanted a treat and they all sat up and lifted their ears up, then we just tossed it up for grabs and they just about fought each other off of the pill and gobbled it up, leaving them wanting more.

These particular pills only cost $15.00 per pill, if you want to purchase them individually and the vets will just pull one of them out of the box and sell it to you. Otherwise one box will cost you $75 for a six month supply. So far, we have not seen any fleas anywhere, and as for the ticks we think that we have gotten rid of the possibility of them attacking our pets. We simply removed all of the pine trees in our yard. The only thing that we have to worry about is if our yard ever gets run over with fleas.

About three times a year we treat our lawn to prevent any infestation, we really never had any problems with fleas but, we just did not want any in our house. Sometimes, we are a little overprotective to our pets and make judgment calls that will affect us in the wrong way. You can't go wrong with this product it safe and vet recommended. There are some side affects listed but as to date we have had no adverse affects at all.

One of the side effects that are listed, is one of the most common and that is vomiting, other possible side effects that could happen are depression, lethargy, loss of appetite, in-coordination, diarrhea, itching, twitching, trembling, salivating, and possibly seizures. The best thing that we have found is that before you use this check with you family vet before purchasing. Since we only have to worry about fleas ¾ of the time we do not have to treat our pets year round. Usually 9 months out of the year is good for us.

We did check with our vet, even though there are a lot of side effects listed, they have been using this for several years and the worst thing that has been reported is that one dog threw up one time. Other than that this has been a good and safe product. This is what our vet told us and that is why we decided to give it a try.

Conclusion
Since our little mishap, we have learned our lesson about purchasing stuff like this over the counter. We value our pets life as we would our real children's life, and when they are sick we are also miserable. For now, this is working and it is a lot easier to give.

I did read about Hartz, and I definitely won't use it. Thanks for the tip.

Do you know whether there is a similar product for cats? Now that our cat knows we're putting medication on his back (he has a great memory), we can't catch him to apply it!

Whatever you end up using for your cat, avoid Hartz!  Check out this review of Hartz.  It's truly heartbreaking :(
