How can we thrive? Currently, I'm trying to find ways in which I can make this community more interactive and engaging for members. While the community has been growing, I'd like to see more creativity and activity on a regular basis. If you have any suggestions, please post them here. After all, a community is dependent upon the people in it.

You can feature different reviews and send them a little congrats on being featured note, Bethany had a great idea about making a Facebook page and adding your content on that page- which people would love and it makes it easier for them to share with their FB peeps- it also helps your content spread easily on the web, share reviews on Twitter/FB/email, etc and let the members know that you shared it, encouraging them to do the same...

Other than those suggestions, I would still be the positive person that you are and comment on reviews, rate reviews that may not be exclusively about your community but, the reviewer may be interested in your topics. You can browse Luncher's interests and see if any match up with your communities and let them know about your community on their profile page. You can send a bulletin to your followers/friends to remind them about your communities as well!

I would think that the new feature of having open communities would help as well- what do you think of it? If I see any new Luncher, I know that myself along with the Brand Ambassadors and @devora make it a point to guide them to relevant communities. Hope that helps!

Good ideas, Deej. I was also thinking that another way to encourage more activity would be to allow for more badges. Currently, members can only earn badges through reviewing or posting quick tips. I'd like to be able to give members badges for posting lists, asking and answering questions, and other contributions. Any chance that could be arranged?

I like that idea as well, sometimes people don't have the time it takes to write a quality review. I will pass this onto the team and let you know the answer :)

Thanks. I just figure that there are a lot of people who do work on the site such as adding topics, filling in wikis and category details, adding media, etc. who don't necessarily get due credit. In fact, the Lunch team doesn't get enough credit for that either.

Also, you can do some outreach to those popular Vampire blogs that you had mentioned in the comments, send them a message and let them know about your community here! Once they come on, they'll love that they have a place to post and share and get a positive response.

This is true! I would like to give badges for lists and questions for sure- since those provoke thought and inspire contributions. There's some feedback about the overwhelming number of badges so I would be a little concerned with a huge number of those going out at one time. Also, wikis, details, topics are edited by the Lunch community- so if someone adds to a wiki or a new detail, then they would get a badge but, that would take away from the original wiki creator's badge.

Yes, I see about the wikis. That would present some issues. But people have liked the badges, right? The reason I ask is that I've been creating a ton for my communities and I wouldn't want that to be something that's actually keeping people from contributing.

Overall feedback has been great- a lot of people feel it's encouraging and nice to be rewarded for their reviews. I think the feedback about the bombardment of the badges had to do with the Chime In and Big Reviewski that were around just for comments or reviewing in a community once. However, they're no longer with the site- so that solved that problem ;p I think personalized badges to the communities are the way to go.

Whew... (sigh of relief)... I was worried for a second there. I have a whole list of custom badges planned.

Great idea on the custom badges; I'm making special Xmas ones in the Silver Screen community. And there are plenty of Christmas-specific comics from the old collector days. Archie's Christmas Stocking Annual, for example, LOL.

Let's be honest here. We can do everything right and tweet on twitter, do a link on FB and you can do badges and everything. People will be people, and they'll review when they're good and ready; not when you want them to. One thing we need to do more is to talk to your members--not talk in the way that you do a LOT of newsletters, you talk to them in their reviews and promote their stuff throughout the COL. Motivation is key, Tweeting helps and other things, but we need members who'll have the passion to review and make them want to keep that passion under your COL.

The founder also needs to set the quality by example, a founder needs to review more. Members tend to review more when they are comfortable, and when they trust the founder and motivators. Yes, the founder needs to review quite a bit, especially when the COL is young. A newsletter does help, you can publish and ask for ideas on it, while promoting your content. You can promote your ideas but the founder have to be the one to execute them first. Seemingly inactive members may give off the impression that they don't care but they're just watching. I watch the sites I go to first before I test the waters. Your members can invite, they can promote and they can promote--but in the end your COL represents the people in it. The real problem is getting these members to acknowledge and comment on each other's reviews; it won't be a community unless that is achieved.

Also The Vampire Historians COL is pretty specialized--maybe a little too "boutiqued" (much like ASIANatomy). I would say ask your members what they want to see...? Perhaps you need to also be nice to the movie franchise "Twilight" and the series "Vampire Diaries"? who knows?! LOL! Hey, they may be fans of vampire lore for the wrong reason IOHO, but they're still vampire fans and everyone has something to share...

perhaps we can send out blood kits with the faces of inactive members LOL!

I've read over everyone's advice, and my only advice would be to stop worrying about it. It sounds like this Vampire community might be morphing into something you didn't initially want it to be all because you are trying to cater to the generic masses of vampire lovers. I recommend taking William's advice and just lead by example, as far as your own reviews go, and don't compromise your own standards, values, or what you wanted this community to be since the very beginning. Hope this helps!

Love your newsletters by the way.
  • One suggestion is to make more badges. I went on a badges marathon the other day and got more responses in comics and sci-fi.
  • Another suggestion is to post a lot on Twitter. I may not get more reviews but I have noticed more traffic since doing that.
  • Finally, I suggest going onto your highest producing people and encouraging them to invite their friends to Lunch and your community.
  • Oh, and doing a search for the Tags that would have vampires in them, and invite those persons to your community.

Hope that helps, good luck.

I have a couple of new horror films to watch/review but they're not vampire related. I will rent more later. Lair of the White Worm and a Karloff mad scientist feature are coming.
