Does a Sneaker Get Any More Classic than the Chuck Taylor?

The term "sneaker" conjures so many various images for different people, but I have to believe that if aliens from another planet arrived at my front door and wanted to know what a sneaker was, the All-Star would be the first thing that came to my mind. Regardless of what athletic shoes actually looked like in the '50s, what is Marty McFly wearing in Back to the Future? Chuck Taylors. Checked out any classic '60s NBA photos lately to see what the shoe of choice (and really the primary option) was? Chuck Taylors. When you think of Punk Rock breaking in America in the '70s, what do you think half the kids at CBGB were wearing? Chuck Taylors. And when the '90s and '00s reinterpreted Punk half a dozen times, what's the most direct way to tie that look together from the ground up? You guessed it, Chuck Taylors? If Nike can buy Converse and won't even think about touching the classic silhouette of this shoe, you know it's a bona fide icon.

Could never understand why these are still popular. They are very uncomfortable compared to the newer brands which have more padding and arch support. My arches would collapse if I wore these more than an hour.

You're on the ball. Converse All Stars are classics. When I'm wearing sneakers, I'm wearing All Stars. I have literally walked across cities in my shoes ...which brings me to my only complaint: They aren't supportive at all. I once made the mistake of trying to hike up the Hollywood Hills in my Chucks ...and practically slid down the hill on my butt. They're wonderful shoes, especially for someone with a good dose of '50s and punk rock nostalgia like myself. But, oh, the toll they play on my arches.
