A lot of people don't know that there is a big difference in a regular claw hammer and a rip claw hammer. You can purchase a off brand name rip claw hammer at just about any place that sells hand tools. The way you can tell if you have a rip claw hammer, you will see the two claws will be straight and not curved. I have spent over thirty years in the construction industry and these are the type of hammers the all of the carpenters carry in their tool belts.  If you are looking for a Craftsman tool that is multi-function tool, this might be the one for you. If you are a fanatic such just like me, then you will love this Rip Claw Hammer by Sears and can also be found at K-Mart for less than $19.99. You used to be only able to find these at any Sears, but since they have merged with a whole bunch of different store such as K-Mart and Ace Hardware the availability is tremendous. The prices and warranty still remain the same. If you were to purchase any Craftsman product at any of these retailers, you will not need a receipt just take it back to the store and they will replace the product.

Description
This particular hammer is made of polished drop forged steel to prevent rusting and bring the ultimate strength to the hammer. But, they do have them made out of other materials such as fiberglass and titanium. Each of these Claw hammers that are made, has a pressed in piece of hickory, that acts as a  plug and that is inserted into the head and this allows the head to be secured without worrying if the head will come off with each impact. Each of these hammers are exactly balanced and have a air cushioned rubber coated handle. The whole tool has a polished shine to it and is very easy to clean. The handle end is covered with a rubber cushion, that has holes that are supposed create comfort and air circulation, so the hammer will not slip out of your hand. These do come in various weights but this one only weighs 16 ounces and right around 13" long.

Experience
This is an excellent tool to keep inside of the top of your tool box. I have all different types of claw hammers and ball peen hammers and this one weighs 16 ounces. There is no room for you to use this in tight spots. That is the only problem with this tool, but problem can be solved by only using this tool in certain applications. Don't expect too much from this tool, and you will be happy that you spent the money to get it. I simply love this hammer from Craftsman.

I have been using these for several years and not one time did the claws or head ever break or chip. These are made of hardened steel and are very durable. I have left these under the hood of the car, and all of my projects around the house. I have accidentally dropped these and kicked it around, they would just bounce off of the floor or ground and when I found them they had some scratch on them from hitting the ground, but mainly still intact, no chips or bent claws were found. If you are using the right weight this will usually serve any application that you put it through as long as you have the room to swing the hammer.  You will need to make sure that you have enough room for the head to fit into, the spot where you are trying to use this may be too small and an accident will be into the making.

The really nice thing about this tool is that it does do several tasks but, basically the clearance for the head of this tool is very important. You may use this tool frequently, but when you do happen onto one of these types of jobs, you will be happy that you have one of these hammers inside of your tool set. This is probably the most used part of my tools because it is so handy and versatile. A lot of times I do not have time to cut and remove any existing framing, instead I just grab this hammer, which has an assortment of different sizes. But, by having a hammer that is balanced and feels good in my hand, one good whack will usually keep the project in line and, I have all I need to make a repair. This tool is only versatile to an extent because of the room that you need to make this work properly. I have had some problems with working in small spaces with this hammer and to freely swing this head. Plus, the hammer will slip and may strike something that it is not supposed to, such as an electrical line. So I have to be very careful when I use this. Whereas, if I use a regular hammer in a tight spot or when it comes to ripping out old lumber, I can't apply as much pressure and not worry about slippage but with this hammer it will allow me to put a lot more pressure on the project to get the wood out and fix and replace an old piece of wood.

Conclusion
This is not a bad price (24.99)for a Rip Claw Hammer as versatile as this one. You will be surprised at how much you will actually use this tool. Just because it is so easy to grab, this hammer is the all around right hammer for just about all jobs and making sure that you do not have to go back and search again for another hammer. Five stars for durability and versatility and  ease of use.  But, I would go out to buy this tool because you need this for your jobs and want to save time. You will be better off just sticking with your regular Hammer unless you really need to do your jobs.
