Tango For One

How hard is it to dance the tango? I think it's really hard, especially in front of a live audience, millions of viewers, and the most critical judges on the planet. I also recently took a Tango class (for uber-beginners) and couldn't believe how difficult it was to get my feet, arms, and chin coordinated to be in the right place at the right time (let alone look graceful and perform with sizzle).

So, that being said, I'm mildly obsessed with Dancing with the Stars (mostly because I sincerely wish I could dance like these people). Plus, it just looks so darn fun!  The professionals have killer bodies, wear crazy costumes, and dance with such speed and precision that you can't believe their human. The celebrity guests usually leave something to be desired. However, I find myself rooting for them and praising their diligence.

I watched 90% of the dances this year and was very impressed with the rate at which the celeb guests were improving.  All three of the final contestants were strong, charismatic performers.

My favorite was Gilles, the hunky, foreign heart throb that played to his sex appeal. His passion and desire to improve his performance, and earnest need to please the judges and the crowd, was consistently evident and endearing. His Argentine Tango was my favorite. Cheryl Burke had great choreography that was sensual, intense and all around striking.

Melissa was a crowd and viewer favorite. Having suffered so publicly from her recent diss and dump by Jason (a total jerk, in my opinion) on The Bachelorette, I really wanted her to do well.  She deserved redemption, and overall I think she got it. Her dances were graceful and she looked happy.

Shawn Johnson, a 17 year-old Olympic competitor, was as cute a button. She definitely had to work hard to give the impression she was older and could express character. Overall, I thought she was the most precise and apparently the judges agreed that her footwork was exceptional. Her partner Mark Ballas was a great match for her youth and playfulness.

So, the final performers were awesome and Lady Gaga (the featured musician of the night) rocked, but otherwise the final show content left much to be desired. In fact, I'll just say it; it was such a HUGE disappointment!!! First, the show was live, which always makes the airing a bit uncomfortable.  The taping lasted two hours and it was way too long. The episode was filled with nonsense that was uncomfortable, boring and insulting to the dancers. I appreciate the attempt to make the final show different, unique, and amusing; however, I think it took away from the positive spirit of the show.

Here is my beef:

Why was there a standup comedian on the show? Former Dancing with the Stars performer, or not, what gives Jeffrey Ross the right to bash and trash the judges, hosts, and every one of the contestants?! This guy was not funny, he was nasty. His comments of the finalists (who sat in a row of chairs on stage next to him) included graphic discussion of Gilles private package, Shawn's height deficiency, and a terrible dig at Melissa's runner-up status when it comes to love (as if ABC hasn't kicked her enough). I was actually horrified (as were some of the contestants, judges and announcers). It soured the mood and created a very bad vibe right before the finalists were about to perform. I'd like to know who thought that was a good idea!

Then, to make matters worse, Gilles lost. In my opinion he was the most consistent on every dance from beginning to end. He was vastly more expressive, had more character, and was just a bit hotter than everyone else (sorry, but it's so true)!  I think Shawn is a great performer, but she didn't deserve to win. It was Gilles turn to bask in the limelight.

Of course, my final show criticisms won't stop me from watching again next year. It is one of the few reality TV shows that is entertaining and encourages me to get off the couch and try something new.
