The main character in this book is a man who is dying of cancer. The premise may sound depressing, but the book is not. Death My Own Way is a good reminder. It reminds me that a person can choose to die in a peaceful and respectful way. This is a lovely message to communicate about death. The main character is intentionally naked in this book. He symbolizes a person who is not afraid of death and has nothing to hide. This novel is set in one evening in Central Park. Graziano makes Central Park sound like an excellent place to meet people. He makes me want to visit New York and make some new friends.
Death My Own Way expands my definition of art. Graziano communicates these theories of art by using homeless people. Each homeless character has a different opinion about what art is. There is a musician and a teacher among this group of homeless people. Graziano reminds me to value the opinions of homeless people. What I learned from read this book is that art is not just a painting on a wall. It is an expression of love. It is the end result of a series of failures. This book implores me to find the art and beauty in my own personal experiences. Each piece of art communicates a vitality and a passion for life. Death My Own Way is a thought provoking book.
