The death of the former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi occurred on 20 October 2011. The media reported that a National Transitional Council (NTC) official had told Al Jazeera that Gaddafi had been captured that morning by Libyan forces near his hometown of Sirte. Gaddafi was reportedly found by NTC forces hiding with several of his bodyguards in a drain underneath a road west of the city. He took refuge there after being targeted by a NATO airstrike while attempting to flee the city. During his capture, Gaddafi reportedly shouted "Don't shoot, don't shoot," but was shot by rebels anyway. According to Abdel Majid, Gaddafi's legs were both wounded. An NTC spokesman told Sky News that Gaddafi's body was being flown to Misrata.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Libya's Prime Minister and several NTC figures have confirmed Gaddafi's death. The NTC stated that it was caused by wounds suffered during his capture. Al Jazeera aired a graphic video claiming to be of Gaddafi's bloodied body after capture.
