The most miserable day of my life.

It was May 1978 and I had just started a brand new job at a trucking company in nearby Seekonk, MA. Being the new kid on the block I really appreciated it when a couple of my co-workers approached me about joining them on a deep sea fishing expedition off the Rhode Island coast.  Now I had absolutely no interest in fishing but I thought this would be a great opportunity to get to know the guys while at the same time experiencing something a bit out of the ordinary.  I'll try any activity once.  My share of the expenses to rent the boat would have been around $35.00 which was a lot of money in those days. But I threw caution to the wind and agreed to go.  Very bad idea!

We agreed to meet around 7:00 in the morning at a local restaurant for breakfast.  That is where I made my first mistake.  Not knowing the first thing about deep sea fishing or the very real possibility of getting sea sick I ordered greasy pancakes and a side of bacon.  Someone should have warned me. It was an order that I would come to deeply regret.  After breakfast we hopped in our vehicles and headed for the dock. The boat was scheduled to depart around 9:00 A.M.  As soon as we stepped onboard I felt a bit queasy but I attributed that to the pancakes and didn't think much more about it.  As I recall there were 6 or 7 of us on board and I was the only one who had never done this before.  I had no idea what to expect.  Shortly after 9:00 A.M. the captain revved up his engines and we were on our way.  Almost immediately I noticed there was something different about the wave action.  I had been on boats in Narragansett Bay before and I had never experienced the least bit of discomfort.  But this time it was different.  Instead of the short choppy waves I was used to there were l-o-n-g, s-l-o-w swells and they were making me sick…..very sick.  To make matters worse there was no turning back.  I was just going to have to grin and bear it.  Within 20 minutes I began to vomit.  I don't believe I have ever been so sick in my life…..before or since.  I literally threw up until there was nothing left to upchuck.  If that weren't bad enough the guys were now preparing the bait for the bluefish they were hoping to snag.  It was gross to say the least.  This only made me sicker.  And I must tell you that if there is anything worse than vomiting it is the dry heaves.  Now I just add and drank just so I would have something to throw up.  Finally I just went down into the cabin to lay down. At about noon I emerged and made a feeble attempt at trying to catch a fish.  Needless to say I was unsuccessful.

For the rest of the day I just kind of sat there and watched what was going on.  My co-workers managed to catch several bluefish and congratulated each other on their success.  I was not impressed. They all looked pretty much the same to me.  At long last we were heading home arriving back at the dock around 4:00.  I still felt nauseous. The day had seemed interminable. When at long last I stepped on dry land my legs were literally wobbling.  It took me the remainder of the weekend to get my bearings. As a result of this incident I did not step on another boat for years and it was probably 25 years before I rode a boat on Narragansett Bay again. A sad state of affairs for a guy from "The Ocean State". As for deep sea fishing I found that whole experience to be nothing short of dreadful.  I know lots of folks enjoy it but one time out was enough for me. This is one activity I have absolutely no interest in ever doing again.
The most miserable day of my life. The most miserable day of my life. The most miserable day of my life. The most miserable day of my life.
