Your Life Will No Longer Be Hell As Long As Dell Is Involved.

  • Nov 17, 2010
For the most part Dell is pretty good when it comes with helping you build a laptop to fit your needs. When I first called them I was interested in an Alien-ware laptop, but as I found out, by the time I was done with installing everything that I wanted the cost was astronomical. It was a mere $5,000.00, this was just a bit over my budget and I also found out that this type of laptop was more for someone that does a lot of gaming. The main reason that I was ordering a new laptop was because my wife was starting graduate and I needed to get her something that no one else can mess with. That is why I went to Dell for help. When it was all said and done we got the price down to $3000.00. The important thing that you need to know when you purchase a laptop or desktop computer, is that the price that they are advertising is only a starting point. Once you start answering their questions and adding the software and hardware that you will operate your new pc efficiently the will go up with each item and that is how a computer that is advertised for $1000.00 will cost you $3000.00. The out the door price, is the one that I am interested in.

This laptop weight 9 pounds and has a 17.3" multi-touch screen. You do get to choose from several different which are silver, black, and red. We chose black outside, red trim and a silver keyboard, and we ordered it with the following software and hardware: Intel core, i7-840QM (1.86-3.2 Ghz, 8M/8 threads), 8GB, DDR3,1333 Mhz, 2 DIMM, backlit keyboard, internal, 17.3" multi-touch HD+ (900p) bright LED display with true life and camera, facial recognition software application version 2.4 compact diskette, ATI mobility radeon HD 4650 1GB, 1TB (2x500GB) 720RPM Sata Hard drive, the outer casing is black chain link with red trim, genuine Windows 7 Home premium, 64bit, English, Dell connect 2.1, Dell support center software 64 bit 2.0, Dell welcome software dimension/inspiron, PC-Restore, Dim/Insp, Windows live search, multiple user interface, Windows 7 label, Dell resource DVD, back-up, 1747, Dell-download flag, Dell software, wild tangent games, data safe local back up, ebay webslice, Skype VOIP application, adobe reader 9.0 multi-language.

In addition to all of this we got a lot more such as; Dell software roxio 1.0, Cyberlink power DVD 8.3 Blu-ray disk playback, 6X slot load bluray (BD) combo drive (BD read only), SoundBlaster X-Fi Hi Def audio software enabled, Intel WiFi link 6200, fingertapps touch zone, Win7, Dell touchcam application 1.1, cyberlink you paint, win7, MCaffee pearl mui, 24 month, without media, 85 WHr 9-cell lithium Ion Primary battery, Microsoft office 2010 home and student, English.

There are a lot of warranties and these include;  Dell hardware limited warranty plus at home service and extended service, and initial year, third party at home service, 24x7 technical support and 2 year extended, next business day in home service after remote diagnosis in the initial year, soft contracts and consumer complete care, 3 year limited warranty, complete care accidental damage protection, inspiron 3 years, 2 year extended warranty on the support, Lojack theft recovery and software service 1 year, 5GB datasafe online 1.1 for SDO/DIM/INS/XPS, Dell wireless 365 blue tooth module 2.1.

Just to let you know, that if you plan to go this route and order through Dell, make sure that you have enough time to stay on the phone with the Dell staff. They are going to ask a lot of questions especially if you are going to need more than the basic model. When you get your new laptop you will only get 6 back up cds, which are two cd's will be for your drivers and utilities, one of the cds will be for your Dell Touch cam software, the next cd is for your sound blaster sound card, the next cd is for your Microsoft works 9, and the last cd will be your main cd that will allow you to reinstall all of the media for  Microsoft windows.  Each of these cd's are sealed and have a key code on the back of the envelope so do not discard these, because they are already installed in your new laptop. Your new laptop should be ready to go and use once you plug the power supply and in.

You will have to set up Microsoft windows and you will need the key code located on the back of the envelope. You may also have to install the sim card to allow you to connect to the internet. You can also use this laptop either by wireless or with a cable. We prefer a wireless connection so we followed the prompts that helped us along.

On the right side of your new laptop you will see 7 different items and these include the on/off button and light, AC adapter connector, battery status light, the dvd/cd player, a USB connector spot, an 8 in 1 media card reader, and an Ethernet cord connector.

On the left side of your laptop you will see 10 different connectors or options and they are; a security cable slot, Ethernet net work connector, a VGA connector, Display port connector, HDMI connector, a eSATA/USB combo connector with USB power share, an antenna connector, an express card slot, audio in/microphone connector, audio out/headphone connector.

The keyboard has three main functions and the is the keyboard/backlit keyboard option, touch pad buttons, and the touch pad. There are several pad gestures that this laptop offers you to do and they are; panning, auto scroll vertically, auto scroll horizontally, flicking (which will move the active window to the desired direction), Zooming, pinching (this allows you to use two fingers to either open or close them to zoom in or out in one motion), rotating, the desktop can be minimized just by setting your hand on this pad for a few seconds.

There are eight total media sensor touch media control keys and they are a launch windows mobility center, mute, decrease volume level, increase volume level, play previous track, play or pause, play next track, and eject. With these you also have 7 media control keys that you will have to actually depress to get them to work. These are F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, F12, and an eject key. The only key they do not have is the launch windows mobility center key.

When you first open your laptop up you will see five different display features and these include; the left digital array microphone, a camera activity indicator, a camera, a right digital array microphone, and the display monitor. With the Dell touch zone you will be able to do the same things that you can do in the touch pad. When you first see the Dell touch zone there will be 9 boxes that you can either have pop up in a straight rectangle or in a half moon design. The options that will be already installed in the Dell touch zone area is; picture viewer, Dell touch cam, notes creator, drum zone, you paint, games, music, internet explorer, and help feature.
My wife and I have been using this laptop for a little while now and we are extremely happy with the ease of use that Dell has made this. This has been very user friendly, and it only takes just a shade under 3 minutes to upload and only thirty seconds to shut down. This has a cool Dell touch zone that my wife and I love. It kind of looks like a roulette wheel and will rotate from the right to the left when you drag your finger across the screen. With a simple touch anywhere on the face of the screen will allow you to access any part of your new laptop.

I doubt very much that we will ever fill up all of the memory that this laptop has to offer. Just to let you know that the camera function is only good if you know someone else that has a camera on their pc or laptop. You also need Skype to be able to use this function. The most important thing that this laptop has is the edition of Microsoft 2010, this will allow my wife to use the APA format that she needs to type all of her medical papers in. On our last pc, Microsoft dropped the APA format and it was a real bear for her to do her assignments.

When we use this studio 7 laptop, we also like to use the cd rom to play our cd's. Depending on how good of a sound card that you have Dell install in your laptop will depend on how good the music sounds when it comes out of the two speakers on the face of the keyboard. We have yet to be somewhere and the battery has run down while we were using it. We have used this for and eight hour period and it lasted the whole time. Since this has 8GB of ram there is always room to spare but if you install a lot of programs the space will be taken up and when you get it all loaded this will slow the start up speed down a bit.

If you have to ever remove the battery they highly recommend that you power down your laptop before you do so. There are a lot of software features that we have yet to make use of, such as the facial recognition which will help protect your laptop from being operated by unauthorized users. You will also be able to use this to create all kinds of brochures cards, fliers and spread sheets. You can also use this computer to watch videos, play games, create your own cd's and dvd's, and listen to your favorite radio stations. This laptop has a lot to be able to do and it also offers you to be able to personalize your desktop.

On a final not this has something that I have never even heard of and that is a warning beep. There are 8 different types of beeps and each one means a different thing, such as 1 beep means BIOS ROM checksum failure, 2 beeps mean RAM failure, 3 beeps mean possible motherboard failure, 4 beeps mean RAM read/write failure, 5 beeps mean real time clock failure (replace the battery), 6 beeps mean video card or chip failure, 7 beeps mean processor failure, and 8 beeps mean display failure.

The other thing that I can recommend is to purchase a backpack from Dell, all of the store bought ones are really flimsy and Dell has thought of everything so that the pack will carry your laptop no matter what size that you purchase. My wife and I are extremely happy with this laptop and I know that this should last for the entire Masters degree program which is 2 ½ years long. Five stars for all of the improved technology and ease of use that Dell has made this.
