Are You a Victim?

You can't see it, you can't touch it, but you can certainly feel it... We are all discriminated in some ways, whether we like it or not. It can be race, gender or even age. Having said that, until you are a subject of discrimination, chances are you don't dwell too much on it. Unfortunately, it is something one cannot avoid for long, unless one decides not to step out of one's environ (be it a village, a city or a country). Yet, even if you don't go out of the house, in the virtual world, you can also be discriminated against.

Is it something wrong with the world or is it something which you have no control of? Many a times, we lament that there is so little we can change about other's or our own reality. We have little direct influence on how others choose to view the world, or in this case, to discriminate against others. Sometimes, I even do it unconsciously. It's like being inbuilt, from young, we view others who are different as "inferior" to the majority of us. I'm not saying that is the right thing to do. I'm saying it's quite a natural thing to do. I suspect even in the animal kingdom, it's the same modus operandi.

Discrimination is not bad per se unless there is the element to hurt and demean (which is normally the case). Someone gains and some else loses in the process. To many, especially the western world which espouses equality (and we know how difficult and "boring" it is to be equal to everyone) is a right. In many other region, it is something that we have learned to tolerate. As you'd have know by now, I've no answer to this. Just my own personal experiences.

I'm an Asian and a woman. Enough reason for many to discriminate against me. Yet, I don't feel that is rampant in the world I'm operating, unless I choose to take others too seriously. Sometimes, it is best to just let go of other's meanness and get on with life as best as one can. This review is not intended to provide answers.

On the other hand, I hope having some opinions about it will allow others the chance to speculate and to ask more questions about it. I do held the view that if you think and react negatively to discrimination, it is likely that you'll encounter even more of it in life than you care to remember. What we magnify, we give it power...

Well, with discrimination, it doesn't spell the end of the world. It is merely a lousy social conditioning. The idea is not to eliminate it totally (unfortunately, as with war, it will never ever go away entirely). The idea is to accept that it will always exist in one form or another. Then try to find some way to overcome it. That's the only way one can truly "control" it. That's my belief on this subject matter.

Very nicely put, Sharrie. I pretty much have the same take as you when I experience it myself, whether someone deliberately and shamelessly hates or if someone really just doesn't know and says the wrong thing. The latter is usually the case. You're right, discrimination is always going to be around to some degree and it may have a lot to do with evolution and social conditioning. Thanks so much for sharing this thought-provoking review!

yup. there is always discrimination. The sad thing is, even the people who get discriminated against also play the part without even them realizing that they are discriminating against other things. Some get discriminated against because sex, age, religion, creed--some get discriminated against because of social status, at work if they have lower salaries...all for other stupid things..but are subtle and can easily be covered up. Sad to say, discrimination is always going to be around as long as there are people who think they are better than others--some even don't know that what they're doing is discrimination, while others feel that they need to discriminate to make themselves feel better. Nice review, Sharrie!
