While there's a completely reasonable side of me that recognizes double parking as illegal, annoying to others, and potentially dangerous, I'm going to throw caution to the wind here. Maybe it's having grown up in suburban Los Angeles, where I rarely came into contact with too much of a reason to double park before my teenage years, but I find something mildly thrilling about it. It's the same enchantment, sprinkled with just the faintest whiff of danger, that I get from many elements of urban automobile use. High speed chases may be a little hazardous for my taste, but double parking is just my speed.

The primary art of double parking has to be avoiding the ticket. Unlike parallel parking (which takes skill) or angle parking (which is either free or offers the easy legality of a parking meter), double parking requires a sense for just how long you'll need to get out of your car, run your errand, and get back on the road before a cop shows up. They don't teach that stuff in school.

Another significant danger with double parking is aggravating fellow motorists. The irony of double parking is that the streets large enough to keep double parking from severely blocking traffic generally have a traffic flow so thick that a car completely stopped may present actual danger. So you'd generally only dream of getting away with double parking on smaller streets that may force motorists behind you to face oncoming traffic as a means of getting around your parked car. This is the kind of thing that starts fights on hot days, but that's the chance you take when you live dangerously.

I am terrible at double parking and parallel parking. I make my girlfriend do it honestly. I am always afraid of hitting the cars and having the owners witness me in the process!
