Industrial hemp is non-psychoactive and was a highly valued crop in the founding of the Republic. Presidents Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp. Americans were legally bound to grow hemp during the Colonial Era and Early Republic. Politically … see full wiki
First I will tell you, I love LOVE LOVE Dr Bronner's range of pure-castile hemp soaps. I cycle through the 'flavors' in some unfathomable body-dance; Tea Tree... for months and months, then Rose..., now Lavender... ; round and round and round.
But second I will tell you with supreme pleasure that I played a small part in hemp oil finding its way into Dr Bronner's soap recipe, and it was way back in 1998.
A brave little group of us had taken on the task of putting on an industrial hemp expo in San Francisco's Fort Mason. We figured we could pull it off after our very successful Santa Cruz Civic events (2), though we were doing it, as ever, on a shoestring. I had the inspiration to call Dr Bronner's and ask if they would 'sponsor' the two bathrooms in the Expo hall, with their very fine soap.
My memory is that an hour later I was still on the phone with David Bronner, grandson (or great??) of the original notorious Doctor Bronner. Turned out that David was the new generation Bronner chemist and was seriously interested in the fact the hemp oil is phenomenal for skin ( vitamins A, D, & E, essential fatty acids, enzymes and Omega 3 & 6) and fabulous in soap.
Now I cannot claim more than this, for it took a whole industrial hemp cadre for Bronner's as a company to make their extraordinary journey from there to here but they went on to not only incorporate hemp oil into their broad range of soaps, but became a leading player in the industry, taking on the DEA re hemp prohibition.
It transpires that mutli-generational Bronner's are larger than life! Besides their brilliant advocacy and educational efforts to restore industrial hemp to the Grand Old Republic, they have gone on to forge Fair Trade agreements for every ingredient in their products; a very big deal in cosmetic-grade circles.
Dr Bronner's took on the DEA: "Dr. Bronner’s funded and coordinated the hemp industry’s protracted and ultimately successful litigation with the DEA, culminating in a clear victory on February 6, 2004 in the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. David Bronner serves on the Vote Hemp board and is currently President of the Hemp Industries Association (HIA)." http://www.drbronner.com/industrial_hemp.html
