Dropkick Murphys w/Against Me! Rock Philadelphia!

Just in time for St. Paddy's Day Dropkick Murphys along with the support of Against Me! rolled into Philadelphia to bring us a big ol' dose of Irish pride, swagger, and slamming punk rock with a sold-out show at the Electric Factory. Against Me! were about to take the stage when we arrived at the venue and you could already judge what kind of night was in store by expectant and eager faces of everyone in the crowd. Against Me! started playing and did not stop, mixing in new tracks off their latest release "White Crosses" with old favorites such as 'Walking Is Still Honest". "You Look Like You Need A Drink" and "Thrash Unreal". The band had the whole venue moving and by the end of the Against Me! set, this crowd was amped and ready for the aural assault of Dropkick Murphys.

The venue darkened and Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" was blasted through the venues PA system, and I certainly could not think of a better song to intro the band to the stage. The band did not even make it to the stage before the crowd surfing and mosh pits began to open up, and once the opening notes of "Hang 'Em High" began there was no stopping this crowd, they were eating up every moment that Dropkick Murphys graced the stage and it became a free for all of energy traded off between the band and their adoring fans. Quite a few times through out their set front man Al-Barr lept off the stage and climbed down to the pit to create an even more intense experience for the fans, who obligingly belted out every chorus right along with him in the face-to-face situation. It is always a pleasure to see a band that is willing to break down the barriers that separate them from the audience and get down and dirty with the rest of us in the pit.

The band never slowed down and their set consisted of a great mix of old and new songs alike, and every so often they would drop a hint reminding the crowd that their new album "Going Out Of Style" has been recently released. Just to note, if you reading this and you haven't picked up the new album, stop reading and go get it now! Dropkick Murphys are a band that have always been steadily making a name for themselves and the album is definitely worth quite a few spins. While there is a strong party asethetic to the album, there is also a message behind quite a few of the tracks that deal with workers rights in Wisconsin and our countrys ongoing political stuggles, overall the disc is fun and thought provoking at the same time. If tonight's show is any evidence, people are definitely listening and truly taking the music to heart.

The crowd remained enthusiastic the entire night and Dropkick Murphys put on an amazing performance. The stage looked great, the band looked great, and believe me they sounded even better than imagined. Highlights of the set included "Barroom Hero", "Johhny, I Hardly Knew Ya", "I'm Shipping Up To Boston", and of course the first of three encore songs "Kiss Me, I'm Sh**faced". It was huge Irish punk rock party for the night and we survived, happy to witness the rowdy spectacle and can't wait to do it again in the future!

I love Dropkick Murphys! I'm jealous that you got to see this show so close to St. Patty's Day- that is awesome! Great review, I really felt like I was in the pit. I love bands that break the barriers, too, after all- that's what you're there for.
