I can understand the dismay of many Eagles fans, being presented with yet another compilation, a repackaging of the same oft-compiled material. It can seem like another of the Laurel Canyon crowd (Joni Mitchell is the prime example) preaching to us about the evils of materialism while they grow ever richer with reshuffled Best, Very Best and Very, Very Best albums. I suppose, as they are such keen environmentalists, there is some logic to all this recycling.

And yet...this IS a good album. For someone buying their first Eagles album, this is perfect. Attractively packaged, with good insert notes, it has 33 tracks that include all the essentials.

The band members will take great pains to assure you that they are not "Country Rock", but embody a wide range of influences, especially Rhythm and Blues. Well, I have listened to every track on this album with that in mind and it all sounds thoroughly Country Rock to me. Not that there is anything wrong with that -- I just wonder why they are so defensive about it. This is southern California Country Rock that was the natural 1970s successor to The Beach Boys, achieving what Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) failed to achieve, through limited songwriting talent and vocal skills. Eagles was a band rich in talent throughout its various lineups, boasting brilliant musicianship, good vocals and competent songwriting. They have bequeathed us at least one classic, Hotel California. Their music became more rocking after Joe Walsh joined in 1976, losing them some fans and gaining others. But a great many fans have stayed loyal to them from 1971 to the present, and I dare say the band will have as many farewell tours as it has had Greatest Hits albums.

Much of their music can sound rather bland today, in contrast to the innovations of the 60s and the raw sounds of the later punk and heavy metal eras. They belong to a more comfortable time, where dropouts were quietly dropping back in, social awareness was becoming a fashion statement and hippies were about to morph into yuppies. But their music remains good, solid, easily digestible fare and if you want to make room for just one serving of it, this is the album to get.

If you like what you hear, I recommend the DVD of the Hell Freezes Over concert, one of the best selling concert videos ever. It provides a snapshot of the group as it was in 1994.
