Wicker Bicycle Basket Makes a Comeback

By some unexpected confluence of events I found myself in our local bicycle shop inquiring about bicycle baskets. And then I am going dull-eyed as the guy shows me their range of butt-ugly wire baskets.

I am heading out the door when I espy the real McCoy..; sitting way up near the ceiling with a spray of dried flowers inside; a genuine wicker basket. He catches my drift, has his "Aha!!" (Oh; that kind of basket), goes in back of shop and ferrets out a whole bunch of wicker baskets for my perusing pleasure.

Turns out you can still get yourself practically any kind of wicker basket, ranging 20 to 40 bucks, and I did check them all out, but this top o' the range innovation with its 'quick-release' mechanism wowed me. It's a stem-mount, designed for the center of the handlebars, which effectively clears all my cables. The basket itself is properly rigid with reinforced carrying handle.

I have to also mention that I bought this basket in Bicycle Trip (Santa Cruz). They mounted it for me and I did notice as I was wheeling out that the guy was bringing their wicker basket supplies from back to add to the range on lower shelf display!

Don't know if anything I wrote here properly conveys my delight at this olde world wicker basket with 21st century twist but the pleasure of clipping it on and off has not diminished yet.

The last front basket I had on a bicycle was for my 17th birthday and I am every bit as stoked as I was the first time!

Endnote: for anyone who read my front-mounted kids bike seat review, I should probably clarify that I lead a double life, with a bike for grand-kids in Nottingham, England, and then this beloved cross bike in Santa Cruz, CA for mountain/road daily jaunts.
