A little book that can make a big difference

In the interests of full disclosure, I should note that this is I think the only book (yet) in print -- or the Kindle equivalent -- in which I am thanked by name in the acknowledgments. The author was kind enough to let me comment on an early draft of his manuscript. On the other hand, much of this content was first available on Craig's blog, so many other people had a chance to see and read it as well.

Given all that, why pay for this book? Because collected all in one place, the "10 Email Edicts You Need to Know" can transform (big word) the way you manage email and, in turn, the way you work. There are other books that cover the same topic, of course, and to his credit Craig mentions several of them in these pages. But one key difference can be summed up in the fact that Michael Linenberger's "Total Workday Control Using Microsoft Outlook," for example, is 288 pages long whereas "Escape from Email Hell" is only 53.

What Craig has done, in other words, is take some essential lessons and distill them into prose that you can absorb quickly and act upon immediately without having to commit yourself to a particular software platform or email client. Not only that, the book's approach -- a parable of one office-worker's battle with email, with some heavenly help from the Email Angel -- is an entertaining story. How you manage email can bog your workday down or lift you to unexpected levels of productivity. We may not all have an Email Angel to sit on our shoulder, but if you find yourself drowning under an in-box tsunami, some time spent reading "Escape from Email Hell" can be the next best thing.
