A Positive Spin on a Stigmatized Topic

  • Jun 25, 2010

Kay Redfield Jamison is both a renowned author, professor of psychiatry,… and an individual personally diagnosed with manic depression (bipolar) disorder. She also wrote the autobiographical novel An Unquiet Mind that covers her personal experiences with manic depression. If you did not know, manic depression is characterized by periods of extreme excitability (i.e. “mania”) and periods of desolate depression (i.e. “depression”). More information can be found here: https://health.google.com/health/ref/Bipolar+disorder
Exuberance, though, focuses on the “bright side” of manic depression. As mentioned earlier, manic depression is also characterized by a period known as “mania.” Mania includes symptoms such as: an extremely elevated and happy mood, hyperactivity, reduced need for sleep, little self-control, lots of new thoughts, feelings of grandiosity and that one has special skills, over-involvement in activities (such as spending days researching or painting something without focusing on any other aspect of one’s life), etc. Many of these symptoms are, in fact, correlated with increased motivation and creativity. Jamison explores the passionate pursuits by many well-known individuals, and she relates these symptoms to many positive occurrences throughout this book.
Exuberance offers a positive spin on mental disorders. A diagnosis of a mental disorder often results in stigmatization, but Jamison offers a unique spin on this assumption.
I have not given this book the credit it deserves, in that I am in a hurry to finish this review, but I highly recommend that individuals interested in psychology and/or in know of someone diagnosed with this disorder READ THIS BOOK! J
