"Then sit with me a while longer...and let us see what happens."

  • Jan 2, 2011

Have you ever eaten a new dish, something you're not familiar with as a whole, but where each bite reminds you of a different dish? That's what reading Farlander was like for me - various elements that seemed somehow...familiar, but put together in such a way that the whole is altogether different and unique.

As I read, there were several instances where I felt like I should be familiar with a part of the story - whether it was a bit of background, a weapon, or something else. Yet nothing ever materialized as a specific "A-HA!" moment (sorry to paraphrase Oprah). However, the story itself seemed quite unique and extremely enjoyable. The characters were well drawn and entirely human, while the story itself was suspenseful and kept me guessing. There were a few surprise elements, and the ending satisfied while leaving me looking forward to reading a sequel (I hate complete cliff-hangers by authors - *some* element of the story should be resolved!). There are a few different things going on at any one time, but it's not overwhelming and adds to the complexity of the tale.

The only gripe I have (and it may well end up not being valid, as this appears it will be part of a series) is that there were several interactions with a character that didn't seem to have much to do with the rest of the story. I don't want to say more, as I don't want to ruin anything for other readers. And, it's entirely possible that this character will have more interaction with the rest of the story in book #2 - but it felt somewhat out of place here.

Otherwise, I will be looking forward to the next book in what has been named the Heart of the World series. It is well worth reading, and a great way to spend some hours during this cold and dreary winter.
