I Wish They Had These When My Kids Were Young!!!

Digital video is now foolproof.  I just purchased the Flip UltraHD Camcorder and I am very impressed.  This is my first non-tape camcorder and I love it already.  YouTube here we come.

  • Ease-of-Use - This camcorder could not be simpler.  You press the red record button to start and stop recording.  You can zoom in or zoom out.  That is it.  It doesn't come with a ton of features that you will never use but make the interface confusing.
  • Design - While it aims high, I don't think the UltraHD will win any design awards.  Nevertheless, it is small and functional, so it gets the job done.  The simple controls seem somewhat clunky compared to an iPod, but are still intuitive and ergonomic.  The black and chrome exterior is pleasing, but I am a little nervous about the durability of the "flip" USB connector.  Since this is not a first generation product, I am trusting that they have this mechanical part fully tested.
  • Packaging - Flip has taken some lessons from Apple on packaging.  The experience is very similar to opening your iPod or iPhone box.  You intuitively know what to do and the camcorder is up and functioning in no time.  The rechargeable battery pack comes partially charged, so you can start taking videos as soon as you install it.
  • Software - FlipShare software is included in the camcorder itself and installs the first time you connect it to a computer.  There are no CDs to deal with.  With this software, you can easily share a video using email or YouTube/MySpace.  You can also create a movie in 4 easy steps or take a snapshot (since the camcorder itself does not support single shots).  [See the screen shots included in this review]  But if you want to edit videos, you will need to get something more sophisticated, because FlipShare does not intend to be an Adobe Premier competitor.

I purchased this unit at CostCo for $179.99 including an HCMI cable for direct connection to an HD monitor.  For that price, I don't know how you can go wrong.  This is 2 hours of HD video.  My brother recently purchased a more fully featured digital camcorder from Canon, but it was more than twice the price and didn't include HD!  Now we can all become lifecasters if we want to.  Flip UltraHD makes it that simple to shoot and then share digital video with everyone.

I know. I purchased a mono-pod for it now and like it even better. I captured a bunch of family history by recording my dad and his brother on his 80th birthday. The fact that it is already digital and so easy to upload makes it so convenient.

Not a 120 min video on Lunch eh? Your first livecast, I mean. Thank God! LOL... Try a longer video, 13 secs? That sounds more like a movie :-)

Wow, this camcorder sounds awesome!  I wish my parents had one of these when I was young, too, then I wouldn't have to bother converting all those VHS tapes of my childhood onto Bluray or possibly DVD (my parents want each of my siblings to have a copy).

Nice touch with the photos and the video.  Looks like somebody's going to start vlogging soon! :P
