Rush was still groping for its own voice a bit with this album. Lyricist (and drummer) Neil Peart was new to the group, and his influence is immediate, as the lyrics certainly stepped up a notch in intricacy. Frankly, though, at this point,they were bent a bit too much towards "fantasy fiction" as opposed to the "sci-fi futuristic" of 2112. Fly by Night signals the departure of John Rutsey and the recruitment of superlative rock drummer Neil Peart. Peart's membership helped guide this band to a more progressive, powerful trio than they were with the debut. His contributions musically and lyrically were HUGE. But it's important to keep in mind that in being an important album, Fly by Night is not necessarily a great one.
