A retelling of the original Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Part One is a two-disc set that contains the first thirteen episodes of the series. This release also comes with four collectible postcards. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a re-telling of the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime series. This is definitely a re-telling, because some details have been changed, some elements are put in different places in the series, and the story is moving a lot faster than it did in the original Fullmetal Alchemist.

On the main menu of the discs, you can choose to watch all of the episodes, choose which episode you want to see, set your audio and subtitles preferences, and see the extras. When it comes to choosing episodes, you can't choose where in the episode you want to begin watching. When you select an episode, it takes you straight to the beginning of the episode. In the setup menu, you can choose between English 5.1 Surround and Japanese Stereo for the audio. You can also choose whether to have the subtitles on or off.

The only extra on the first disc is commentary for the first episode ("Fullmetal Alchemist"). There are four extras included on the second disc. The first extra is commentary for episode ten ("Separate Destinations"). The next feature is labeled as "Textless Opening Song." While the credit text may not be included, the English subtitles for the opening theme song still remain. The next feature is labeled as "Textless Closing Song." Just like the opening, it still includes the English subtitles. The final extra on the disc is trailers. On this disc are trailers for: Tsubasa, Kenichi, X, xxxHOLiC, The Slayers, Soul Eater, One Piece, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an interesting re-telling of the original Fullmetal Alchemist series, but it's not quite as strong. While each individual episode flows together pretty well, it can feel rather choppy going between episodes. There were some changes made to the original story on the episodes that appear on this disc that I felt weakened the story a little bit. However, viewers who may not have familiarity with the original Fullmetal Alchemist series may be better able to enjoy Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

If you're a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, this release is worth picking up and adding to your DVD library. If you're a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist that must own everything related to the series, this is also worth adding to your collection. If you're a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist who also enjoys Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, then this set is also worth purchasing.

I wrote a review of this DVD set after checking out a copy through the King County Library System.

I heard about this one, and I was wondering if it was worth getting. Reminds of Evangelion 1.01. Thanks for the great review!
