So I was having a great father/son moment when I was driving my dad back down from San Gabriel for him to visit his parents. Like usual, we liked to talk about cars and he normally would tell me something new about them.
So I concluded with this. The economy right now, is not in a bad of shape as we really think it is. We're just suffering because of exterior motives. Too much to state, but I guess the general public realize that also. Our main topic was cars so I concentrated on cars.
This goes out to those American Car, Detroit Big-Three advocates: Scrap them. Ford, GM, Chrysler. Scrap your names for the American's sanity. Sell your name, forget the past and move on to a new brand. Why do I say this? All you hear in news reports are how they can do things to immediately fix the problem in their ever-growing gap of the North American market share.
Why do I say such a thing? I'm not not patriotic, but I would like to see a recovery in American self-esteem. When people yell out reliability, who do they first think? Toyota. When people yell out performance who do they first think? BMW, Mercedes. When people yell out fuel economy who do they first think? Honda, Toyota. Please don't disagree because you know this is true.
No matter how much more fuel efficient, by maybe 2 more MPG, than the foreign imports, it doesn't make a difference. The reason is that brand names such as Toyota, Honda, BMW, Mercedes, etc. walked into the North American market headstrong, as the underdog, and produced reliable, performance and fuel efficient cars FROM THE START. From the start this has been it's staple of sales. People subconsciously purchase these cars because they were reliable and gained reign over the Detroit Big-Three.
Another reason is that those who had American cars in the mid 1970s and 1980s can understand that they were crappy. Those acronyms don't come from anywhere. Ford = Fix or repair daily or Found On Road Dead. Etc. They were so tainted and traumatized that the wouldn't touch another American car since their competitors are more reliable and fuel efficient. Although they looked pretty ugly, people bought them because they believed in the product. Americans just lost their belief. We Americans hold a large grudge against people.
And to add the cherry on top of all reasons: pricing. Who in the right mind would pay the same amount of money to buy an American car if it has a sketchy record of performance, reliability and fuel efficiency if they can get all those three at the same price for a foreign import. Example: Chevy Malibu = base 20k+ Toyota Camry = base 20k+ Honda Accord = base 21k+ Ford Taurus = base 21k+
Now tell me. Out of this, who would you pick? Point Proven.
Now what do I suggest? Sell the name, don't ever reference back to it. Start over with a new company that starts off with reliability, performance and fuel efficiency. You need to entice investors to believe in a product from the beginning that it'll be there, meaning serious business and being cut throat with the competition. If they do this, Toyota and Honda better watch their backs. A great race of underdogs.
