Yummy Genmaicha

Genmaicha is one of my favorite teas and is the primary reason I am a regular tea drinker.

It's a combination of delicious green tea leaves, matcha powder, and a filler of yummy roasted rice, which makes the tea cheap to produce and sell by weight. The rice is a bit starchy and if you use loose leaves or seep it the way I do you may find some caloric value or ruffage in the tea. There are bits of popped rice in the loose leaf versions of this tea, so some also call it popcorn tea.

While I once considered tea to be a kind of serious and even stodgy hobby, pouring these delicious kernals into boiling water at my kung fu studio was my introduction to serious tea drinking. It was a lot of fun. Granted I've coughed up a few leaves from the indefinite seeping time and lack of a strainer, but my Chinese language teacher assures me that this is how the Chinese do things informally. Edit: Genmaicha is Japanese, but good tea is universal, no?

The toasted rice are very yummy and leave a delicate aftertaste. I highly recommend genmaicha. No matter how much I pour in, the water never becomes too dark and the tea never becomes bitter. I went out to Chinatown and puchased my own Genmaicha after becoming addicted to this tea. It was $3.25 for 8 oz. of loose leaves. I'm certain it varies by location or if you purchase tea bags, but I've no doubt I can drink tea constantly for a month on $3 and it tastes wonderful. It is much healthier for you than coffee or soda or most cold beverages.

I purchased some as a gift for a training buddy and thought I was going to be squeezed to death, she was so happy. So be forewarned, Genmaicha could kill you!

Ok, so I just wrote a review of Yerba Mate in which I bash green tea. I do have to say though, genmaicha is AWESOME! Love the nutty flavor.

Hey Erin, I was just thinking about this today! I was at a Korean market and bought a small pack of Genmaicha for $1.99. It's my first time with this tea, and it was very enjoyable!

Cute review. I like the idea of "popcorn tea." Can you believe I've never tried this before? Has this replaced your beloved Diet Coke?

Rachel (not sure where else to respond to you), I usually use the brand in my attached picture YamaMotoYama. Will keep my eyes open for your faveorite next time I'm at a health food store! :)

I love this tea also! My wife got me into it and now I prefer it to "normal" teas hands down.
