Germany is a country with tons of travel destinations, from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, to Neuschwanstein Castle outside of Munich. A country filled with rich history from the days of the Germanic tribes up to the first woman Chancellor. As a traveler in Germany, you will not get bored but instead find yourself wanting more. The landscape in Germany ranges from the German Alps in the south to the open ocean of the Baltic see in the north, from the rebuilt Europe in the east to the beautiful Rheine Valley in the west. A country that was nearly flattened during World War II, the Germans were not only able to rebuild their beautiful country, but turn it into the richest country in the European Union. Home to the European Central Bank in Frankfurt and DHL in Bonn, Germany is one of Europe’s leaders in the economic World.

Transportation throughout Germany is simple. Trains connect every major city, town and village. The best place to buy trains tickets is from Deutsche Bahn or just going directly to the train station. Each city has some form of public transportation whether it’s a subway which is typically called a U-Bahn or buses. There are also various cheap flight airlines such as German Wings and Tui Fly.

Centrally located in Europe, Germany is known to have many big cities mainly due to the fact that the areas in Germany did not become one country until the late eighteen hundreds. There are major cities in every corner of Germany including Munich, Berlin, Cologne and many more. Each city has its own unique culture and many cities even celebrate different holidays for instance, Cologne is known to celebrate Carnival and Munich is known for celebrating Oktoberfest. During these holidays the cities shut down and the people head out to the pubs and throughout the streets to party and celebrate.

The Germans love sports and are proud to show it. The most popular sport in Germany is Soccer or as they call it Fußball. I would highly recommend trying to attend a soccer game while in Germany. You will never experience anything like it. Another popular sport in Germany is Handball. I was actually fortunate enough to be living in the country when the Germans beat the Polish in the Handball World Cup.

Germans have great pride in their local beer and would be more than happy to drink some with you. Most regions and cities have their own special brew that is only available is those cities or regions. For instance the regional beer around Cologne (Köln) is Kölsch and you typically cannot find Kölsch is Berlin. There are many pubs throughout Germany that offer their local beer along with other more name brand beers.

Nightclubs are big in Germany, but you won’t typically find hip hop playing in these clubs, instead you find house music and techno. Most Germans aren’t as dance crazy as American so be warned if you go to a club and start dancing, you may be the center of attention on the dance floor.

Although Germany saw its low point during the rise of the Nazis, today the German people have formed their own unique identity. Most Germans are very warm-hearted and would love to have a conversation with you. Do not feel as if they are unwelcoming people if they don’t talk to you on a train or in a public area like most Americans might do. Typically when a German finds out that you speak English they’ll want to join in conversation with you so they can practice their English.

The country of Germany is a beautiful place. There are so many “European” villages, rolling hill and snow capped mountains that the country can make you feel like you’re in a fairytale. The Rhine Valley has a castle on every hill top and the old village homes look like something out of a movie. Yet, even with its old European look, Germany is a very modern and sophisticated society as well. Most cities have modern architecture mixed in with medieval building. Frankfurt am Mein, which is the financial capital of Germany looks like a modern American city from being rebuilt after WWII, yet you can still find old building that date back hundreds of years.

If you find yourself in Europe, I highly recommend you do not miss the modern cities, medieval towns, night clubs, hundreds of castles, and beautiful rolling hills of Germany.
