Golden State of Mind

I'm born and raised in the Bay Area so loving Bay Area sports team is in my blood, whether I really do love them or not.  Regardless of how I felt of the team during the season, if they make it to the playoffs, I pretty much get excited and join the thousands of people who are "49er faithful," part of the "Raider nation."

So after 13 years of not making the playoffs, they finally locked in the eighth of eight seats for the West. Then proceeded to make history through the greatest playoff upset in the history of the NBA (8th rank team beating the 1st rank team Dallas Mavericks).  It's expected that fans show up to these games, because to be perfectly honest you don't know when they'll next make it to the playoffs.

But what's more, and what makes being around GSW fans SO great, is how much heart they really do have.  As the Warriors were teeter-tottering the last few weeks between spots 8 and 9, a hardcore Warriors fan himself, Paul Wong, printed "We Believe" signs from his own print shop, and handed them out at games.  As the fan base grew larger and larger, he printed up to thousands and just ate the cost as he felt it was something that had to be done as a true Warriors fan to support to the team he loved.  When the "We Believe" slogan REALLY took off before the playoffs, Comcast ended up printing bright yellow shirts with this logo to hand out for free at playoff games.  I may not be the best judge of true blue Warriors fans, but that is some serious love for the team.

Just a few of the reasons why the Warriors fans are climbing the list in terms of best fans in the NBA:
  • The sea of bright yellow T shirts at games - this REALLY is a sight. You get energy just being around it.
  • You can FEEL the energy. I don't really like sporting games where you feel like you should be on your laptop and sipping a cappacino instead of on your feet cheering for the team. (Cough*SF Giants*Cough). You WANT to stand up and support, because everyone else there wants to to.
  • They cheer. They cheer LOUD. Deafeningly loud. They cheer the entire. freaking. game.  During one of the playoff games against Dallas, the fans did not sit once during the second half. There's a reason why it's nicknamed Roaracle Arena.
  • They don't cheer when the Warriors get something done, they cheer and encourage TO get something done... which is why fans should be there!
  • Their fans really love them.  The Warriors were one of the only teams to attendance consistently increase as the years went on, despite not making the playoffs for 13 years.  It's easy for the Lakers to have a lot of fans because they are great and they have Kobe, but the Warriors (along with the Knicks and a few other teams) have fans that renew their season tickets even with crappy records year after year.  That is a true blue fan base.  ( I was not one of them, I will admit.  I still am not one of them.)
I think this "We Believe" phenomenon (started by just one fan) in addition to making the playoffs is exactly what the Warriors needed to get that added team spirit. I know Sacramento, Boston and Utah are amongst other teams that have some of the most supportive fans out there, but as I haven't been to a home Boston or Utah game, I can't give commentary. (They look pretty crazy when they broadcast it on TV though!).  Warriors fans are def giving them a run for their money!

And as Baron Davis said when they swept the Mavericks in the playoffs, "Couldn't have done it without the fans."
