Texas native Grady Skelton has released his second Country/Americana album called “Live Simply.” The album is a collection of songs that runs the gamut of emotions from being in love, to being lonely, to just having a good time. Grady, who has shared a stage with Eli Young Band, Robert Earl Keen and more started pursuing his music career while he was at school at Texas A&M. However music has been a part of his life for a long time. Back in Jr. High he was already learning to play guitar as well as writing his own original songs. That early practice seems to have paid off because Grady penned all the tracks on this new project.
“Live Simply” is an album that feels very organic. It seems focused on showcasing Grady’s original sound while featuring piano and background vocals at pivotal times. The album starts out with “We Like Drinkin.” This song is a fun loving tune and a standout song on the album. I can see this being a popular song at a concert. The title track, “Live Simply” is probably my favorite on the album, it is simple yet powerful at the same time. It is a love song, but a unique one with lyrics like, “I wanna live simply in the comfort of your arms, girl you look so beautiful in your bare feet no big city lights no fancy cars, just you and me in our blue jeans, small town, good friends and my guitar.” The current single “Girl I Love” has a great beat, and is quite simply just a sweet song about a guy who loves his girl and wants to tell the world. Who doesn’t want to hear their guy say “She brings the man out in me that I want to be…” as Grady sings so believably in this song.
Overall the album is good. Not great in my opinion, but good. A few of the songs really stand out, but some of the others are very generic sounding. Grady’s voice however is very distinctive. He has that Texas grit and country soul that mixes quite well. I would recommend giving the album a listen and seeing what you think of this up and comer. I would keep my eye out for Grady as I think his voice has a memorable quality.
