Thinking about giving to others even as we try just to subsist ourselves.

One of the reasons for the "Great Recession" we are in, which the pundits have thrown around, is that people took on too much personal debt and lived outside of their means- Perhaps not educating themselves enough and/or expecting others to provide a safety net. So it is even more fitting that I should want to point out an organization that strives to teach/show people how to provide for themselves and have a sense of their own and greater responsibility.

Handing Out Hope is a nonprofit in Southern California, which promotes self-reliance and self-sufficiency in individuals and communities around the world. They attempt through good works and fundraising to create opportunities for people to develop their livelihoods and self-efficacy so that they don't have to rely on charity and handouts - Give a man fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a life time. A really great nonprofit in my opinion that does more with what little people can give -Especially now. Throughout history, during a time of economic uncertainty and hard-times, people usually attempt to buckle down, shedding a lot of the extras in favor of the necessities. I think it's important not to lose a sense of community.

These hardships that many of us are facing now, often leave us feeling alone, helpless and lost. Our friends and family, if we're are lucky enough to have them, are what we can count on during times you can't expect to count on anything. But just as we are happy to receive let us not forget to give. Even if you cannot give financially, you can certainly give in other, ways, time, effort, ideas, spreading the word about a good cause, etc. So if you have time or even by chance a little mulla, check out Handing Out Hope, and remember, we are never alone, nor should we be.

Sounds like a great organization, reminds me of the Good Shepherd Center, it is an organization for women and children but they also offer services that help the women become self-sufficient. People need all the help they can get these days.
